PRESS RELEASE
WALLA WALLA POLICE DEPT

Area residents scammed by door-to-door solicitors
Date: June 1, 2012

Area law enforcement agencies have received several reports of door-to-door soliciting scams.

The suspects are using different stories when contacting residents, asking for donations for a variety of causes. They have asked for money to support the "Wounded Warrior Project", donations for the Walla Walla High School Softball Team to go to Hawaii, selling magazines to raise money for a school, and selling care packages for soldiers serving overseas.

The scammers will ask for cash or checks. There have been at least 5 victims identified, with others possibly in Umatilla County and the surrounding area.
As of this time, there is only a description of one of the suspects. She is described as a Caucasian, 16-18 years old, about 5'6", blond straight hair a few inches below her shoulders, and slender build. No vehicle has been described at this time.

Area residents are urged to immediately report any suspicious solicitors to their local law enforcement agency with descriptions of suspects and vehicles. Door-to-door solicitors are required to be licensed in the City, with credentials to be readily available.

Residents are also urged to immediately contact their financial institution to stop payment on any checks they suspect have been written to these scammers.
