Special Education Students Make History

Students with special needs from Walla Walla, College Place and Dayton school districts made history May 22 at the Dave Klicker Track as they competed in the first annual Walla Walla Valley Day of Champions track and field meet.

This fun and inspiring event was hosted by the Walla Walla Public Schools’ Special Education Department. Students competed in a variety of events with the support of Wa-Hi ASB Leadership students, cheerleaders and other Wa-Hi students serving as “peer buddies.” District office staff were on campus supporting the event in a variety of roles.

Area firefighters from Local Union 404 brought their classic fire truck to support the event. Parent and community leader Lawson Knight volunteered as the event announcer and Sweet Lou from the Walla Walla Sweets Baseball team joined in the fun. Seattle Seahawks donated two Pete Carroll signed footballs for the Most Inspirational Athlete and the Most Involved Peer Mentor. All participants received medals of achievement and t-shirts.

Special thanks to WWPS Special Education Director Libby Thompson her team of educators and support staff for making this event a tremendous success.
