District rejects higher than anticipated track bids

Walla Walla Public Schools Board of Directors unanimously rejected all bids for a new Walla Walla High School all weather track Tuesday, July 28 after bids came in higher than anticipated. District Business Manager Ted Cohan reported to school board members the lowest bid of $910,000 from Harry Johnson Plumbing and Excavation of Walla Walla was $240,000 more than anticipated for the project base bid.

Big Blue Boosters helped the district raise $650,000 for the project last year school year, however approximately $50.000 of these funds have already been spent on architectural, design and permit fees. The district also agreed to fund $150,000 for the project and another $100,000 in contingency for construction costs in excess of projections. Cohan expects the district to rebid the project during the 2015-2016 school year when it is anticipated costs will be lower as contractors prepare for their summer work load. The new track will not be ready for the 2015-2016 track season.

“We are disappointed with the bid results, but remain committed to seeing this project become a reality,” said Cohan. “The students deserve and need a quality facility, but we must remain patient as we work through the construction process.”
