Trip to Whitman opens doors for science students

Wa-Hi Advanced Placement Biology students visit Whitman College
This week Walla Walla High School students in Peggy Payne’s and Mary Burt’s Advanced Placement Biology classes took a field trip to Whitman College to do a microscopy lab, tour the campus, and learn about admissions.

Whitman College Science Outreach Coordinator Heidi Chapin helped coordinate the activity. She said Whitman College is committed to supporting public education.

“At Whitman College, we really like to give back to the community,” Chapin said. “We identify the resources we have that are easy to share to invigorate the schools science programs and build upon what students are already learning.”

For Wa-Hi sophomore Stella Gryler, the field trip to Whitman College provides lab learning opportunities not available at her school.

“There is a lot of neat science equipment at Whitman College that we don’t have at Wa-Hi,” Gryler said. “We were able to look through these good microscopes at Whitman College to support what we have been learning all year.”
