AAUW recognizes area high school students

The American Association of University Women—Walla Walla Branch recently honored 10 area high school students for their work in Science, Technology, and Mathematics. Dr. Marion Götz, an Associate Professor of Chemistry at Whitman College spoke about her educational experiences, and she encouraged students to investigate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) courses during college and find mentors.

High Schools in our branch area include: Walla Walla High School, Lincoln High School, Prescott, Touchet, WWVA and De Sales. The following young women were honored: Cara Hall, Josie Anhorn, Amy Elmenhurst, Jaqueline Velazco, Rachel Miller, Autumn Rea, Rachel Carson, Amelia Schwartzkopf, Madison Garrett and Bethany Roulston.

Dr. Götz talked about the struggle women face in STEM—according to a study by the National Science Foundation, less than 30 percent of doctoral degrees in Physical Sciences were awarded to women in 2012. Götz discussed the hidden biases that can prevent women from pursuing STEM degrees and encouraged young women to pursue courses of study in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Her advice included: find a mentor, be critical and assertive, get involved in research, don’t underestimate yourself, don’t let criticism get to you, and have fun.

AAUW was founded in 1881 to promote education and equity for women. The Walla Walla Branch was chartered in 1921, and we currently have over 145 members. Membership is open to men and women who hold a two year degree or higher from an accredited college or university. AAUW Co-President Cecile Ervin thanked the families and inspirational teachers for supporting the young scholars as they pursued their education. Ervin also encouraged them to learn more about AAUW and all of the ways it supports women and scholars. Walla Walla High School Social Studies teacher Michelle Higgins is the AAUW High School Scholars program chair.
