How Decisions to Cancel or Delay School are made:

Process For School Closures and Delay Decisions:

Walla Walla Public Schools carefully considers the safety and well being of its nearly 6,000 students and 800 employees when weighing inclement weather impacts on school operations. The following details the process the district uses, daily, when poor weather conditions strike.

Every afternoon the transportation supervisor, maintenance director, communications director, and superintendent conference regarding current and proposed weather conditions. Collectively they review the latest NOAA guidance and consult, when questions arise on preparedness and response, with the City Street Superintendent and the County Director of Public Works. Based on anticipated conditions, the district deploys their weather response team throughout the evening/night (6 p.m. to midnight) or in the morning (4 a.m. to 10 a.m.) to plow and clear sidewalks and parking lots, deploy ice melt, and sand/gravel all high traffic areas. If winter precipitation is expected through the night/morning, they deploy the crews at 4 a.m. If additional precipitation is not expected, the crew is deployed in the evening to allow for the greatest opportunity for an on-time start.

By 4 a.m. every morning when weather conditions are questionable, the Superintendent and transportation director drive multiple routes throughout the district's boundaries to ascertain road and travel conditions. Meanwhile, the district's maintenance director is monitoring school sites and communications director is stationed at the district office to receive and communicate the district's decisions. By 4:45 a.m. the superintendent has consulted with the transportation and maintenance director, in addition to communicating with regional superintendents to ascertain western and far southern conditions surrounding Walla Walla.

Collectively, district personnel determine if conditions warrant a cancellation. Normally such decision to cancel is made no later than 5 a.m. and communicated to all parents/community via various modes. If the district feels that conditions will improve with additional time via a 2 hour delay due to anticipated warming trends, additional time to allow for district crews to respond, or that the city/county need additional time to clear roadways, a 2 hour delay will be initiated.

It is understandable that such decisions are often contested by stakeholders based on family preparedness, location, and ability to accommodate schedule implications. WWPS understands that cancellations and delays present a hardship to families and the greater community and empathize with all stakeholders during the winter season.
