Bond Oversight Committee receives prestigious Chamber of Commerce Business Showcase Award
Congratulations to our Walla Walla Public Schools Bond Oversight Committee on receiving the Walla Walla Valley Chamber of Commerce Duane Wollmuth Catalyst Award! This award is part of the Chamber’s annual Business Awards Showcase program and is sponsored by Baker Boyer Bank.
On November 6, 2018, Walla Walla voters overwhelmingly approved a $65.6M bond measure with an historic 73% YES vote. As promised to the community, a citizen-led bond oversight committee would be formed to ensure bond and matching dollars were spent only on voter-approved projects. Led by Chair Scott Morasch and vice-chair Mark Hess, the Bond Oversight Committee convened over two dozen accountability review meetings and on-site inspections. These community volunteers reviewed and publicly posted monthly bond budget reports and project updates to ensure community transparency and financial accountability.
They supervised the advertisement and selection of the projects general contractors, architects, vendors and consultants. This included assisting in securing over 50 local contractors and suppliers for bond project work. Bond Oversight Committee members carefully reviewed financial statements, project scope and construction progress to ensure bond dollars were only being spent on projects approved by voters. The project came in $300,000 under budget thanks in large part to their oversight. These remaining bond proceeds will be returned to voters in order to reduce the cost to local taxpayers.
