Community members learn about new state learning standards

Community members participate in an activity during the Washington State Learning Standards (previously referred to as the Common Core State Standards) overview presentation Thursday evening in the school board room. Standards specialist Casey Monahan and Assessment Specialist Maria Garcia coordinated the presentation.

The hour-long session focused on sharing information about the new standards, how they are used and how they better prepare students for college and careers. Monahan and Garcia stressed the standards are not curriculum, rather what students should know in English/Language Arts and Math in grades K-12. They also shared resources available on the district website to help community members better understand the new standards.

Additional presentations will be planned during the school year to further discuss the new standards and how they are assessed.
