Latino Club members travel to Olympia to meet elected officials
Twenty-one Wa-Hi Latino students attended the annual LEAP Conference (Latino/a Educational Achievement Project) and Legislative Day held in Tacoma/Olympia, January 16-18. Students were engaged in leadership workshops, career and college readiness sessions throughout their three day visit. During Legislative Day Friday, January 17, students toured the capitol buildings and met with 16th District elected officials Senator Mike Hewitt and Representatives Maureen Walsh and Terry Nealey.

Students discussed the following issues:
- In-state tuition for undocumented students
- Financial aid for undocumented students- 1079
- DACA/DREAM Act - Legal residency and citizenship
- High school graduation requirements

“Our students represented Walla Walla and Walla Walla High School extremely well,” said Intervention Specialist Melito Ramirez. “I was very proud of them. I did not feel I was on a field trip with kids, but with responsible young adults who genuinely care about their peers, community and high school.”
