New procedures keep Nutrition and Fitness healthy
With strong volunteer support, committed leadership and staff, students and parents who believe health is a key component of learning, it’s easy to see why the district’s new Nutrition and Fitness program has all the ingredients for success.

Tuesday night volunteer Jim Russo, who chairs the district’s Nutrition and Physical Education Advisory Committee and Health Services Director Jennifer Douglas briefed the school board on efforts made this year toward meeting the requirements of the Nutrition and Physical Fitness Policy 6700 which was adopted in 2005. Procedures to implement the policy were approved in January 2006.

Health Fairs at Sharpstein, Garrison and Pioneer this year were a result of this coordinated effort to curb childhood obesity and instill a love for fitness and proper nutrition. School gardens at Sharpstein and Garrison have also been put in place this school year. Some schools have even changed their lunch schedule to allow for recess before lunch to help students work up an appetite and eat all their food.

The new procedures set nutrition standards for foods and drinks available at the district, directs healthy vending options in middle and high schools, guides health and fitness education to meet state curriculum requirements, and encourages alternatives to food for fundraising and rewarding students.

FFA Marketing team number one in state
Tuesday night Wa-Hi Future Farmers of America Advisor Mike Martin introduced members of the State Champion Marketing team to school board members.

Martin said team members Grant Robison, Corben Ketelsen and Dane Swenson were one of the hardest working teams he had ever coached. This year’s marketing plan involves local farmers venturing into Agri-Tourism by offering guided hunts on Walla Walla farm land. The plan also captures the area’s popular wine industry. The students completed a market analysis study, business proposition, action plan, budget, website and marketing brochures.

The team will advance to nationals this fall. Martin thanked the school board for supporting the program over the years and said he will always consider Walla Walla home. Martin is taking a similar position in Idaho next year to be closer to his children and grandchildren.

Transportation keeps students safe and on time
Tuesday night Transportation Director Tom Head briefed school board members on Transportation operations. The district’s 35 bus fleet transports 3000 students daily and logs more than 300,000 miles annually.

Head said the department also educates students on school bus safety with a remote controlled bus named “Barney.” Transportation staff Mike Stroe and Diane Trout often volunteer to operate and assist in the program.

Garrison’s Florian decides to resume Dean of Students role next year
Earlier this spring Garrison Middle School Dean of Students Esteban Florian was promoted to Assistant Principal for next school year. This week Florian announced he has made the decision to return to the Dean of Students position for the upcoming 07-08 school year.

“This decision weighed very heavy on his heart and mind and I believe that his commitment to Garrison students and staff played an integral part,” Garrison Principal Gina Yonts said. “He is here as a building leader to support the work already started and to assist in the continued success of kids and teachers.”

Florian has been employed in the district for 10 years and is in his second year as Garrison’s Dean of Students. His previous district experience includes working as a Reading Specialist, Transitional Bilingual teacher, and English as a Second Language teacher. Florian earned Bachelor degrees in Spanish and Elementary Education from Walla Walla College and a Master’s degree in Education and Administrative Credential from Washington State University.

A search for a new Garrison Middle School Assistant principal has begun.

Wa-Hi’s Jeraldine Enriquez to Attend Whitman on Murr Scholarship
A scholar-athlete, “Jeri” is called “an exceptional, well-rounded model student

The Murr Scholarship Committee has announced the recipient of its Class of 2007 scholarship - Jeraldine “Jeri” Enriquez,
who graduates from Wa-Hi June 8.

The scholarship is awarded to a Wa-Hi senior on the basis of financial need and merit, and admission to Whitman is a prerequisite. It includes tuition and room and board for four years.

The first member of her family to attend college, Enriquez, who speaks three languages, graduates with a cumulative 3.55 grade point average and has been involved with an array of co-curricular activities. She earned a Blue Devil varsity letter in swimming all four years, participated in basketball, soccer, tennis, Wa-Hi’s Foreign Language Free Speech Club, Amnesty Club and International Club, and has served the greater community through the local blood drive.

Among comments in teacher recommendation letters: “exceptional student and very well-rounded”; “a model student, both in her academic responsibility and class participation”; “she contributes thoughtful insights to discussion, treats her peers with the utmost respect and consistently exceeds expectations.”

“We couldn’t be more delighted that the Murr Scholarship Committee has selected Jeraldine,” said Tony Cabasco, Whitman’s dean of admission and financial aid. “She’s an impressive young woman whose academic accomplishments and leadership will enhance the Whitman community. We remain ever grateful to the Murr Family Foundation for its support and for making possible for the finiest local students to attend Whitman.”

The Murr Scholarship is sponsored by the Murr Family Foundation and combined with Whitman financial aid. Michael Murr and his wife, Eva, established a fund at Whitman specifically to help fund the education of one Wa-Hi graduate every year. Michael graduated from Wa-Hi in 1969; he was an excellent student and outstanding athlete and is a member of the Walla Walla Athletic Hall of Fame and has been recognized as a Graduate of Distinction. He went on to study at Harvard, where he earned his bachelor of arts and MBA degrees.

Wa-Hi continues to produce outstanding students who go on to attend Whitman. The Class of 2007 will send four to Whitman, including Enriquez, Awet Alazar, Anna Forge and Spring Lonneker. Other Murr Scholarship recipients who will retun to Whitman in the fall include Yasmeen (Colis) al-Marrikhi, Ben Vandonge and Meghan Carlson.
