COVID-19 Testing

Covid-19 Test

Student Testing Information

Goal: To provide low-barrier, easy-to-access local testing for students of Walla Walla Public Schools

Purpose: To eliminate unnecessary quarantine for non-covid illnesses, to rapidly identify and isolate Covid infections, and to enable students to safely attend in person learning while decreasing risk to classmates and school staff

Rapid Test Overview:
- Free testing for students
- Results available in 15 minutes
- Can be performed locally at the student’s school
- Sample collected by minimally invasive self-collected nasal swab
- May not be as accurate as a PCR test, especially if asymptomatic
- A positive antigen test will require a follow up PCR test. You must remain at home while waiting for PCR results (normally 48 hours)
- Requires written parental consent to perform the test

Process:
- If your child has any symptoms before school, keep them at home and contact the school for instructions
- After consulting with your child’s school, if your child has a single low risk symptom and feels well the next day, they may return to school
- If advised, you may be asked to consult with the doctor prior to return, or to bring your child to the school for a rapid test prior to returning to class
- If the rapid test is positive, you will need a confirmatory PCR test and must remain at home while waiting for the PCR results (normally 48 hours). All family members should remain at home while PCR tests are pending
- If your student develops symptoms during the school day, a voluntary rapid Covid test will be offered. A parent or guardian will need to arrive at the school to sign a consent form
- If symptoms are mild and the rapid test negative, your student may remain at school, or opt to go home and consult the primary provider
- If the rapid test is positive, you will need a confirmatory PCR test and must remain at home while waiting for results (normally 48 hours). All family members should remain at home while PCR tests are pending
- If your child has been identified as a close contact with someone testing positive for Covid-19, they will need to quarantine for 10 days from last contact with the person testing positive. If they share a household, the quarantine does not start until the person testing positive ends their 10 day isolation

Staff Testing Information

Goal: To provide low-barrier, easy-to-access local testing for employees of Walla Walla Public Schools

Purpose: To eliminate unnecessary quarantine for non-covid illnesses, to rapidly identify and isolate Covid infections, and to offer voluntary, asymptomatic testing for staff

Rapid Test Overview:
- Free testing for staff
- Results available in 15 minutes
- Sample collected by a self-administered nasal swab
- Can be administered by non-licensed personnel
- May not be as accurate as a PCR test, especially if asymptomatic
- A positive antigen test result will require a follow up PCR test. You must remain at home while waiting for PCR results (normally 48 hours for results)
- Requires employee consent

Process:
- Any staff member can voluntarily be rapid tested at any time. However, priority will be given to staff members with symptoms or other COVID-related risk factors
- Contact your school clinic (or site supervisor if you work at a non-school site) to schedule a time for an asymptomatic test
- Sign the consent form and provide the demographic information to complete the Test Result page
- Staff developing symptoms during the day should request a rapid test. If symptoms are mild and the rapid test negative, they may choose to remain at school, or opt to go home and consult the primary provider
- Staff presenting with moderate to severe symptoms based on the Decision Tree should proceed directly home. Do not return until you have had consultation with your primary provider and symptoms have improved OR a PCR test has been negative
- Staff with a possible exposure due to a secondary (not close) contact with someone who has tested positive can be tested that day, and again in five days. Staff may remain at work during that time unless the initial test is positive
- Staff who have had a close contact with someone testing positive will need to quarantine for 10 days from the last contact they had with the person testing positive. If they share a household, the 10 days might not start until the person with Covid completes their 10 days of isolation
- If symptoms develop, they should be PCR tested that day. If they remain asymptomatic, they can request a rapid test on day 8 of their quarantine and return to work that day if negative
