Camp Schedule and Programs

Students will learn about the living tradition of canoe carving and canoeing among indigenous peoples living in Northwest Coastal regions, including the annual Canoe Journeys in the Pacific Northwest, then canoe on Clear Lake.

Students will be able to…

• Define “living tradition”
• Describe the living tradition of canoe carving and canoeing among indigenous peoples living in Northwest Coastal regions
• Coordinate with their canoe partner(s) to effectively paddle forward, backward, left, and right

Pass by the Clear Lake spillway, salmon ladder, and dam on the way to a hidden waterfall. While on the way, students will show each other native plants, animals, natural phenomena, and other cool things through an each-one-teach-one method.

Students will be able to…

• Identify native plants and animals
• Explain science concepts to their peers
• Generate inquiry questions about nature; formulate hypotheses to key questions based on observations and discussions

Dive into learning about the Columbia Basin Watershed through a run-around game, a splashy watershed simulation, an artistic challenge that illustrates the effects of pollution, and a reader’s theater of a Yakama Legend.

Students will be able to…

• Define watershed, pollution, and rain shadow effect
• Visualize how water flows through different bodies of water within a watershed
• Anticipate how individuals, communities, and corporations’ actions will positively and negatively affect the people, animals, and plants that live in a watershed

Learn about the four essentials of habitat and experience the effects of limiting factors firsthand through several habitat simulation games. Students will then use quadrant mapping to investigate macro and micro habitats of animals native to Camp Dudley.

Students will be able to…

• Define “habitat” and “limiting factors”
• Dramatize limiting factors that impact an animal population 
• Evaluate the quality of multiple habitats for various animals

Learn about the roles of producers, consumers, and decomposers in an ecosystem through a run-around game, food web simulation, and reader’s theater production. Then, investigate some decomposing logs and the surrounding soil in order to understand the vital role decomposers play in healthy ecosystems.

Students will be able to…

• Define ecosystem, food web, producer, consumer, decomposer, and photosynthesis
• Illustrate how members of a food web are interconnected
• Explain the role of photosynthesis in an ecosystem
• Generate inquiry questions about ecosystems; formulate hypotheses to key questions based on observations and discussions
• Infer how decomposition supports healthy ecosystems by examining a decomposing tree
• Use scientific tools to identify a soil sample’s porosity, texture, size, nutrient levels, moisture level, and pH; interpret the data to answer inquiry questions about soil’s role in healthy ecosystems
