Unified Bball, Unifies Wa-Hi
Wa-Hi students fill gym in support of Unified basketball team
Wa-Hi’s Unified Basketball team had its final home game at Wa-Hi versus the Grandview Greyhounds. Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team.
Special Olympics provided a $3500 grant to start the program which includes a four-game regular season schedule and opportunities to compete in districts, regionals and state depending on how the team fares. Unified was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.
Players from the Wa-Hi boys and girls basketball programs were in attendance to cheer the team on. Wa-Hi cheerleaders were also at the game to support the team.
The basketball team is coached by teachers Jennifer Butenhoff and Krystal Ceron under the direction of Special Education and 504 Administrator Libby Thompson. Look for Unified Soccer coming to Wa-Hi this spring.
