Walla Walla Public Schools completes bond-related Abbott Road improvements - County set to begin their phase of sidewalk and stormwater improvements this month
Walla Walla Public Schools is pleased to announce it has delivered on another bond promise by recently completing bulb outs on the north side of Abbott Road with ADA compliant ramps at new crossing locations for improved safety measures. Walla Walla County Public Works is set to begin its phase of improvements by installing a new sidewalk along the north side of Abbott Road between Scarpelli Street and Fern Avenue thanks to a grant the county secured from the Transportation Improvement Board.
“We continue to deliver on our bond promise to improve safety and traffic flow on Abbott Road in front of Walla Walla High School,” said Superintendent Dr. Wade Smith. “We appreciate Walla Walla County Public Works as they make improvements to the north side of Abbott Road that complements the district’s safety enhancements.”
Seth Walker, P.E., Walla Walla County Chief Engineer says the new grant-funded sidewalk on the north side of Abbott Road will tie these two projects together and fill in the sidewalk gap that currently exists, to improve pedestrian connectivity to Walla Walla High School. The project will also include stormwater improvements by eliminating a direct drainage outflow into Yellowhawk Creek and installing stormwater infiltration structures under the roadway, according to Walker.
Walla Walla County Public Works is expected to begin the project this week. The section of Abbott Road from Scarpelli Street to Fern Avenue will be closed through September 2. Abbott Road will be open to through traffic when school begins with single lane closures as needed for construction. The project is expected to be completed by October 3.
“If it is possible for you to avoid the area until completion, we would appreciate it,” said Walker. “Walla Walla County thanks you for your patience during construction.”
