Walk, Bike & Roll to School

Berney and Sharpstein Elementary Schools partnered with Blue Zones Project Walla Walla Valley for Walk, Bike & Roll to School Days this spring

May 20 and June 10 Berney and Sharpstein Elementary School students participated in Walk, Bike & Roll to School Days with a "Walking School Bus."

These events were in partnership with Blue Zones Project Wall Walla Valley. “We love to work with schools and encourage students to walk, bike, or roll to school on safe routes with adult volunteers, “said Blue Zones Project Organization Lead, Katie DePonty. “The idea is to encourage students and parents to get outside and Move Naturally and we have only just begun. We look forward to working with all the schools and getting kids outside and moving.”

This spring Blue Zones Project has begun working with elementary schools in the Walla Walla School District to elevate the great work the schools are already doing and to introduce some new ideas. “Blue Zones Project has served as an essential thought partner and supporter as we continue to work towards establishing school environments that promote better nutrition, more movement, and healthier lifestyles for our students and faculty,” said Superintendent Dr. Wade Smith.

In addition to Walking School Buses, Blue Zones Project has hosted and attended many school events to promote healthy choices. Berney Elementary Principal, Michelle Carpenter added, “Through working closely with Communities in Schools, Blue Zones Project has provided multiple opportunities for our families to participate in community-building activities. They have offered volunteers, supplies, and healthy fun for our students and families.”

Blue Zones Project believes in providing healthy activities for children and their families and Saturday, June 25th from 7 – 9 p.m. they will host a free community Pool Party for the Walla Walla Valley in partnership with Memorial Pool. There will also be free family movies all summer in Lions Park in College Place. About Blue Zones Project
Blue Zones Project® is a community-led well-being improvement initiative designed to make healthy choices easier through permanent changes to a city’s environment, policy, and social networks. Blue Zones Project is based on research by Dan Buettner, a National Geographic Fellow and New York Times best-selling author who identified five cultures of the world—or blue zones —with the highest concentration of people living to 100 years or older. Blue Zones Project incorporates Buettner’s findings and works with cities to implement policies and programs that will move a community toward optimal health and well-being. Blue Zones launched the first pilot community in 2009 in Albert Lea, MN with groundbreaking results. In partnership with Sharecare, the model has since been applied to more than 50 communities across North America, impacting more than 3.8 million citizens. The population health solution includes two Health Districts in California; 15 cities in Iowa; the city of Fort Worth, Texas; Corry, Pennsylvania; Brevard, North Carolina; Walla Walla Valley, Washington; and communities in Southwest Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Oklahoma, Oregon, and Wisconsin.
