Mask Mandate Now Ends March 11

Today, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee announced masks will no longer be required in schools after Friday, March 11. Federal transportation rules were also updated and masks will no longer be required on school buses after Friday, March 11. This change is in alignment with Oregon and California.

Governor Inslee noted declining case rates and hospitalizations across the west prompted California, Oregon and Washington to update their indoor masking guidance.

“Once the statewide mask requirement lifts March 11, masks will become optional across our school buildings and school buses for all,” said Superintendent Dr. Wade Smith. “I anticipate many faculty and students may continue to wear masks for varying reasons and it is essential we respect everyone’s decision to do so.”

The Washington State Department of Health will be issuing new guidance for K-12 schools next week so schools can prepare to implement updated safety protocols.
