District Deploys Additional Resources to Deal with Worsening Weather Conditions

Worsening weather conditions this morning are prompting Walla Walla Public Schools to deploy all personnel and vehicles to all school sites and adjacent roads to put down additional ice melt, gravel and implement other safety mitigation factors to ensure conditions are safe when students are released early this afternoon. Superintendent Dr. Wade Smith has also been in personal contact with City of Walla Walla officials to ensure enhanced gravel will be applied around school sites and adjacent roads.

“I want to apologize on behalf of the district for the quickly deteriorating road conditions we now find ourselves in,” said Superintendent Dr. Wade Smith. “Our transportation director, maintenance director, communications officer and I spent two hours this morning driving roads from 4 to 6 a.m. in 2-wheel drive. At that time the conditions were clear on most roads and the forecast revealed clear skies and no precipitation all morning.”

Walla Walla Public Schools also conferred with College Place Schools and both districts proceeded with an on-time start as roads were improving in the early morning hours.

“We also received confirmation that City road crews were already out and in the process of prepping roads with gravel,” said Superintendent Smith. “Unfortunately, road conditions have worsened over the last couple of hours and the roads have become far slicker due to the fog and freezing conditions.”
