District Promise Standards to Support Student Learning

In Walla Walla Public Schools, our mission is to ensure each child is on a successful path toward graduation, opening doors for college, career and life after high school. One of the critical components to ensure their success is through the development of aligned and coherent curriculum, which has served a cornerstone of our district’s current strategic planning efforts.

To ensure alignment, many teachers across the district have worked hard in recent years to identify and develop essential learning standards by grade level in core subjects such as math and language arts. These essential standards, referred to by our district as “Promise Standards,” identify the critical elements and concepts every student must master as they progress from kindergarten through high school. These Promise Standards are vital to eliminate gaps in learning and fulfill our promise to our students and families as we work collectively to realize our vision of Developing Washington's Most Sought-After Graduates.

Promise Standards have been developed for math, English and Spanish language arts, social studies, world language, and we are working to finalize science over the coming months. No matter which school your child attends, or the team of teachers they receive their instruction from, Promise Standards help guarantee they are mastering the essential skills needed. As a parent/guardian, you play a critical role in partnering with us in your child’s success. We ask that all families not only familiarize yourself with our Promise Standards, but also play an active role in holding your child and the district accountable for mastering the standards. By working together we can ensure every student is on a trajectory to achieve our vision of becoming one of Washington’s Most Sought-After Graduates.

This webpage serves as a hub for the content areas where we have identified promise standards. These overview documents show how the standards in each domain progress, building a foundation for students as they move from grade level to grade level in an aligned and coherent system. Individual grade level documents highlight the math and language arts standard, for that particular grade level.
