Withholding of Student Diplomas:

A school district can withhold a student’s diploma in response to a student damaging or not returning/losing school property so that the district is able to replace or repair the missing/damaged asset (note that this does not include lunch or other fees that may have been assessed a student). The district works closely with every family and their individual circumstances and often works out individual payment schedules, accommodations and possible fee waivers depending on the circumstances. If students and/or their families communicate and work with their high school to develop a plan or discuss accommodations, diplomas normally would not be withheld. Transcripts and other student records are not withheld under any circumstances.

Districts are required to publish and maintain the following information on its website:

  • The number of diplomas withheld, by graduating class, during the previous three school years
  • The number of those students who were eligible for free and reduced-price meals during their last two years of enrollment in the district
