Student Health Issues

Student health issues are the primary focus of the Walla Walla Public Schools’ Health Services Department. Here are some of the trends and issues we see in health services throughout the district.

  • Students receive immunizations regularly, thanks to the efforts of our school health clinicians, who review student records for compliance with Washington State immunization requirements.
  • Vision and hearing problems among students are identified and minimized because of annual screenings in grade K-5 and 7. Referrals are made on the basis of these screenings.
  • Students also are screened for scoliosis in grades 5-9, with referrals for follow up diagnosis and treatment.
  • Although oral medications vary per building, it is estimated that less than one percent of all students receive medication at school on a daily basis.
  • Walla Walla Valley appears to have a high incidence of asthma in all populations, including students.
  • Student smoking or the use of chewing tobacco causes increased health risks. Students with family members who smoke also have increased health concerns.
  • The number of overweight students is increasing.
  • Many students have improper diets and drink too much soda with high caffeine intake. Most students have a great deficiency of fruits and vegetables in their diets.
  • We are concerned that if students do not receive health education at school, many of them will not get it at home.
  • There are increased mental health issues among students, including grief, depression, helplessness, homelessness, anxiety, and anger.
  • Many students do not have a healthy adult role model in their lives.
  • We have more chronic health problems and special health care needs among students entering our school system.
  • A school health room may be a student’s first and only access to the health care system.
