FORWARD PROGRAM - WWPS 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC)

21st CCLC programs support the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. These programs help students meet state and local standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offer students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and provide literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.

Our WWPS 21st CCLC Goal

Students who participate regularly in program services gain essential and fundamental skills in core content academic areas, particularly Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, improve grades and test scores in these subject areas, demonstrate increased confidence, self-esteem, and resiliency as related to the regular school-day, and improve the overall well-being of their families, both academically and physically.

Programming Overview

The FORWARD Program serves 500 Regular Attendees annually, which meet a minimum 30 day attendance benchmark. Site-by-site participation attendance breakdown is as follows: 100 at Blue Ridge Elementary, 120 at Garrison Middle School, 120 at Pioneer Middle School, 100 9th graders at Walla Walla High School, and 60 at Lincoln High School.  At each site, roughly half of the targeted population attends on a daily basis, and 50% of the total regular attendees at each site will participate for 60 days or more (i.e. be classified as Active Attendees).  Each site will operate 40 weeks during the school year, for 20 hours each week.  This usually means 3pm-6pm Monday through Friday, with one hour before school for selected/targeted programs; sites may extend their hours to accommodate late sports practices.  During the summer, each site will provide 8 weeks of programming, again for 20 hours; schedules may vary from site-to-site based on Site Coordinator and building administrator determinations (see below for site-specific schedules and contact information).

Activities

Each site offers extensive experiential, hands-on enrichment activities & projects, as well as homework help and tutoring labs. Contact the center's Site Coordinator for the current schedule for each location. Some example after school opportunities include, but are not limited to:
