New Social Studies Curriculum
May 19, school board members unanimously adopted new social studies materials for grades 6-12. The approved materials are aligned with the state's newly adopted standards and helps ensure students and teachers have access to the best materials to meet these standards, according to Executive Director of Teaching and Learning Christry Krutulis.
The process for adopting materials started in the Spring of 2019 and included the identification of WWPS essential social studies standards and a narrowing of materials to pilot to two sets. District teachers unanimously recommended Gibbs Smith materials for Washington State History and McGraw Hill materials for all other classes.
"Teachers were in the middle of piloting materials when schools closed. Their commitment to finishing the pilot and making a final recommendation while moving their instruction online was impressive," said Krutulis.
