Wa-Hi sophomore national JROTC Rifle Champion

Walla Walla High School Sophomore Cadet Sergeant Daniel Enger became the 2015 National JROTC Rifle Champion Saturday at the JROTC All Service National Championship in Camp Perry, Ohio. Wa-Hi’s Precision Rifle Team took second place in the team category. The team consists of Cadet Major Nathan Brewer, Cadet First Sergeant Sabrina Keenan, Cadet Sergeant Justin Mebes and Enger. The National JROTC Championship consists of two days of competition.

“That was the most nervous I have ever been in a match” said Enger. “After I shot the first 9 tens in a row on my first target, I couldn’t get my heart to calm down.”

Enger’s individual national championship is Wa-Hi’s is best individual placement since 2007 when Cadet Captain Amber Criss won the JROTC National Match. Wa-Hi’s team silver medal performance marks their highest team placement at this match since 1928.

The JROTC rifle team will continue shooting against civilian clubs and organizations in their bid for Junior Olympic and Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) national honors. Next month, the team will spend its spring break in Salt Lake City, Utah shooting the CMP’s Western Regional Championship in an effort to qualify for the national championship in Alabama this summer.
