Wa-Hi wins state award for academic achievement

Walla Walla High School earns another state achievement award for academic progress
Walla Walla High School has been named a recipient of the 2013 Washington Achievement Award for the “High Progress” category. Walla Walla High School has earned a Washington Achievement Award three of the past four years.

Washington Achievement Award winners are selected using the Washington Achievement Index and criteria in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) flexibility waiver. The award is given in six categories: Overall Excellence, High Progress, Reading Growth, Math Growth, 5-year graduation rate and English Language Acquisition.

To qualify for this award, Walla Walla High School landed in the top 10 percent of all schools in Washington State for increasing math and reading achievement overall. Achievement trends were analyzed over three school years in making the determination, and two factors were considered:

1. Overall pass rates for the reading portion of the High School Proficiency Exam and the Math End Of Course exams, and;
2. Individual student progress in reading and math when compared to their 8th grade performance.

“Walla Walla High School teachers and students can be very proud of this accomplishment,” said district Assessment Coordinator Maria Garcia. "This award is also a testament to the elementary and middle school teachers, who lay the strong foundation for Walla Walla's students."
