Calzaretta announces selections to National Film Festival

Pioneer student produced film selected for National Film Festival for Talented Youth
Pioneer Middle School Explorer teacher Dan Calzaretta announced two student produced films from his class were selected to be part of the National Film Festival for Talented Youth. The first film is “Queen of the Rink.” This film is a documentary about roller derby in Walla Walla. The filmmakers are Hana Bobrow-Strain (7th grade) and Iman Bruner (8th grade).

The second film is the "Ice Cream with Einstein." This film was made by Pioneer 8th grader Vienna Mumm.

Calzaretta reported this is the fourth consecutive year Pioneer has had at least one film selected by NFFTY.

The festival is the largest youth film festival in the world. Each year about 800 films are submitted, and about 200 are accepted. Hana and Iman will be among the youngest filmmakers at the festival as most films are by college and film school student, according to Calzaretta.

“This is an amazing festival,” said Calzaretta. “I wish all Explorer students could attend. The experience can be life-changing!”
