Nethercutt uses contest to promote civics

Former congressman visits Pioneer Middle School to promote civics education
Former U.S. Congressman George Nethercutt visited Pioneer Middle School Thursday to share information about the Citizens Tournament his foundation has established this year. The Citizenship Tournament is open to students across the state in grades 4, 8 and 12. This contest is designed to help young people better understand government and public policy issues. Nethercutt plans to take this tournament national next year.

“I care so deeply that the principles of our country are perpetuated,” Nethercutt said. “Public schools are a great resource for our country and are the perfect place to perpetuate these ideals.”

Students in Washington state will be competing for up to $10,000 in scholarships and other valuable prizes. Top winners will also earn a trip to Washington DC to meet with elected officials and members of the national press. The contest finals will be held in Spokane later this winter. Pioneer students in Chris Plucker’s and Brad Ludwig’s classes met with Nethercutt.  Several district students are expected to compete.
