Measles Update

WWPS Health Services Director addresses measles outbreak in Washington State – By Amy Ruff, RN
• Governor Jay Inslee has declared a state of Emergency for all counties in Washington State in response to a measles outbreak. There have been 36 confirmed cases in Clark and King Co.
• Measles is a highly contagious virus, spread before people know that they are sick. There have been no reported cases in Walla Walla, but potential for a local outbreak is elevated.
• Measles symptoms include high fever, cough, red, watery eyes and a rash 3-5 days later.
• In the event that measles occur in our community, the Health Department could mandate that ALL students who are unimmunized or have vaccination exemptions be excluded from school.
• The Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective in preventing illness.
• If you have not been vaccinated, or are unsure, call your doctor. If you are ill with measles symptoms, CALL BEFORE presenting to the clinic, Emergency Department or Urgent care/Express Care clinics.
• If you have any questions regarding measles or where to obtain vaccinations, call Amy Ruff at (707) 397-5588
