State test score results

District state test results on target with state averages
Walla Walla Public Schools’ state testing results mostly held steady during the 2013-14 school year, according to results released this week by Washington State Public Schools Superintendent Randy Dorn. Three of Walla Walla’s six elementary schools participated in field testing for the nation’s new Smarter Balanced Assessment of the Common Core, which will replace the Measurement of Student Progress (MSP) in the Spring 2015. The Measurement of Student Progress results released this week reflect scores from Berney, Blue Ridge and Green Park 3rd through 5th graders.

Seventy percent of 5th graders at Berney, Blue Ridge and Green Parkare are near the state average, with Berney Elementary on top at over 80 percent. Elementary math also made a strong showing, with Berney’s 3rd and 5th grades, and Green Park’s 4th and 5th grades coming in above the state average.

“Continued improvement in elementary math is expected with this year’s adoption and implementation of a brand-new math curriculum aligned to the Common Core,” said District Assessment Coordinator Maria Garcia.

As is traditionally the case, Walla Walla’s achievement in science is out pacing the state. Three of the six elementary schools (Berney-72%, Blue Ridge-68%, Prospect Point-80%), Garrison Middle School (78%) and Walla Walla High School Biology (78%) all demonstrated achievement above the state average.

Middle school math improved compared to the 2012-13 school year, especially in 8th grade, reflecting the hard work of teachers and students at both Garrison and Pioneer, according to Garcia. At Garrison, 7th grade math scores were above the state average, at 60% passing. Walla Walla High School students continue to demonstrate high levels of achievement in all subject areas, with nearly 88.9% of 10th graders meeting standard in writing, and 83.6% in math. At 84.7% passing in reading, Wa- Hi is just below the state average of 85%. Lincoln High School’s graduation rates continue to climb, with almost 70% of the Class of 2013 graduating on time, as compared to 57.7% of the Class of 2011.

“We are very proud of the hard work of our teachers and students here in Walla Walla,” said Garcia. “Our staff are dedicated to supporting every single child, every single day in our schools. We’re so pleased with the achievements of those students already meeting standard, and we are committed to providing needed supports to get all WWPS kids to graduation.”
