Latino Club scholarships

Walla Walla High School seniors Maria Fuentes and Laura Olmos received 2014 Wa-Hi Latino Club “ADELANTARSE” scholarships of $750 each which will be designated to a college of their choice to defray tuition expenses. Proceeds for this award are gained through fundraising programs of Exploring Post 311.

Fuentes has been active in Hispanic Youth Exploring Engineering and Sciences Camp at Walla Walla University, Garrison Night School Estrellita pre-literacy program, Wa-Hi Link Crew, Wa-Hi Latino Club, and has been a Walla Walla Union Bulletin Latino Voices feature author. She was the Latino Club president this year. She plans to attend Washington State University in the fall. In 2013, she earned the Learning for Life Leadership Award for persistent efforts to advocate and be a leader and example to other students. This year she received the “Young American Award,” which is a National Scouting youth award sponsored by the Blue Mountain Council of the Boy Scouts of America. As a Latino Club member, Maria contributed more than 96 hours of community service during the 2013-2014 school year.

Olmos is active in Latino Club, the Garrison Night School Pre-literacy program, Wa-Hi Link Crew, Advancement Via Individual Determination program, Wa-Hi Latino Club, and has been a Walla Walla Union Bulletin Latino Voices feature author. This year she also earned the Learning for Life “Young American Award.” She plans to attend Walla Walla Community College this fall. Maria and Laura have been extraordinary participants as Latino Club Members and as Garrison Night School tutors where they serve as positive role models, motivators, and student mentors.
