Walla Walla Public Schools receives clean state audit

Walla Walla Public Schools received “no findings” in the independent accountability report summarizing audit results from the Washington State Auditor’s office. This risk-based audit determines the safeguarding of public resources and legal compliance. State auditors studied data from Sept. 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012.

“In the areas we examined, the district’s internal controls were adequate to safeguard public assets,” stated the report which was presented to Walla Walla Public Schools May 7 during an exit conference. “The district also complied with state law and regulations and its own policies and procedures in the areas we examined. We would like to thank staff for their cooperation and timely response to our requests during the audit.”

State auditor’s examined the following:
- Cash receipting
- Procurement (bidding)
- Evaluation of financial condition
- Associated Study Body
- Payments/expenditures – credit cards

Financial Statements: Internal Control Over Financial Reporting

  • No deficiencies in the design or operation of internal control over financial reporting
  • No deficiencies that we consider to be material weaknesses

Federal Grants: Internal Control Over Major Programs

  • No deficiencies in the design or operation of internal control over major federal programs
  • No deficiencies that we consider to be material weaknesses

“We take seriously our role of maintaining accountability, fiscal integrity and transparency in our all our operations,” Superintendent Mick Miller said. “This accomplishment is a team effort, but I especially want to thank the staff in the Business Office for their attention to detail and professionalism which played a key role in our success.”

Walla Walla Public Schools next audit is scheduled to be conducted in late 2013 or early 2014. It will cover accountability for public resources, financial statements, and federal programs.
