Garrison Middle School student takes grand prize at Whitman College Youth Science Fair
Garrison Middle School seventh grade student Macy Quinn-Sears won the grand prize at the Whitman College 2nd Annual Youth Science Fair. Quinn-Sears won an iPad mini with case for her winning project. Her project was an investigation to determine which hairspray would best power a homemade potato launcher. Macy is in Luke Hamada’s class.

Fellow Garrison Middle School seventh grade student Paige Gardner took home first place honors and won a microscope. Her project was an investigation measuring the pH levels of different types of soda and connections between drinking pop and heart/GERD problems. Paige is in Luke Hamada’s class.

Garrison Middle School 7th grader Campbell Schulke earned a third place prize. He won a gift certificate to the Whitman College Book Store. He is a Type One diabetic. His project was an investigation of different blood glucose testing sites. He was trying to find alternative areas to get his blood sugar and see how the measurements vary.

Pioneer Middle School 8th grade student Paul Wallace investigated how slime molds and how they can travel through mazes to search for food. Wallace is in Dennis Bennett’s class.

Another 7th grader from Garrison Middle School, Hannah Gardner, was not in prize category, however she did an awesome project studying if traits are expressed differently in identical twins. Garrison Middle School 6th grade student Mattie Kapocia also entered a project which tested which type of potato absorbed the most milk when made into mashed potatoes.

There were also students from College Place Public Schools and Milton Freewater participating in the Science Fair. All participants received a certificate of participation signed by President George Bridges and selected a smaller prize donated by Whitman's biology and chemistry departments. Thanks to Mary Burt for organizing this wonderful event.
