Middle and high school students at Pioneer and Garrison Middle Schools and Walla Walla and Lincoln High Schools will be in school a full day Wednesday, June 1 to complete their math End of Course Assessments.
These math assessments are now a state requirement. This represents a change to the 2010-2011 school year calendar. Elementary students at all six district elementary schools will have an early release schedule as originally planned. Contact your school secretary for more details.

Edison Elementary to dedicate art projects at new school
Artist to be in attendance to celebrate with children during all school assembly
All School Art Project Dedication Ceremony

Edison Elementary School is planning an all school Art Project Dedication Ceremony Monday, May 23 at 8:30 a.m to honor the work of Tacoma artist Mauricio Robalino. Robalino has created a colorful wall mural for the inside of the school and a sculpture named Walla Walla Blossoms outside the school’s main entrance. The artwork was included as part of the new school construction project which was approved by voters in 2007 and opened for school in the fall of 2009.
The artwork was funded through the Washington State Arts Commission’s Art in Public Places program. Also known as the 1/2 of 1% for Art program, the Art Commission received funding from the new Edison construction project and construction at the Washington State Penitentiary to fund the Edison artwork. A school committee helped select the artwork. Principal Josh Wolcott says the sculpture and mural helps welcome people to the school and inspires students to do their best and pursue their dreams.
The mosaic will be attached to Edison’s main hallway wall on the ground floor. The mosaic is called “A Day in Walla Walla” and measures 44' x 6'. It is made of plywood, glass nuggets, glass shapes and cement grout. Robalino designed it in the spring of 2010 and started building it November 6, 2010.
“I was inspired to make this mosaic because I had a fantastic visit to Edison and Walla Walla last year,” Robalino said. “It is a beautiful place filled with friendly and smart people. I enjoyed making drawings with the children at Edison and this also helped to inspire me. It is a dream of mine that all my art projects help people to feel happy, curious and inspired to make their own creations!”

State Assistant Superintendent for School Improvement praises Walla Walla High School during visit
Erin Jones, Assistant Superintendent for School Improvement from the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction, visited Walla Walla Wednesday, May 18 to learn more about how Walla Walla High School is closing the achievement gap.
Earlier this school year, Walla Walla High School was named a recipient of the 2010 Washington Achievement Award for the Closing the Achievement Gap category. Walla Walla High School was one of only two high schools statewide recognized in this area.
“Our state is near the bottom in the nation for closing the achievement gap for students of color compared to their white and Asian counterparts,” Jones said. “This is incredible for Walla Walla High School to be one of the few high schools in the state to close the achievement gap.”
Walla Walla High School Assistant Principal Mindy Meyer is a longtime friend of Jones and helped arrange the visit. Jones met with students and visited classrooms during her day long visit. She also met with teachers who are leading the Response to Invention model on campus which focuses on providing the necessary support to meet each student’s learning needs. To conclude her visit, she addressed the Walla Walla High School teaching staff to thank them for their hard work and commitment to help all students succeed.
“Teachers are working so hard and they often don’t hear thank you from anyone, so my main purpose for coming to Walla Walla was to congratulate and thank them for all they are doing to support their students,” Jones said. “I hope to inspire them to continue this work as it’s critical to our nation, state and communities.”
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education created the Washington Achievement Award to celebrate top-performing schools and to recognize achievement in multiple categories.
This highly selective award is based on a school’s performance on statewide assessments for the three previous years. This data is analyzed using the Washington Achievement Index which is approved by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of Education. The Washington Achievement Award is given to elementary, middle, high and comprehensive schools in seven different categories: overall excellence, language arts, math, science, extended graduation rate (high and comprehensive schools only), improvement and closing achievement gaps.
About Erin Jones: (Source - OSPI web site)
Erin Jones has been involved with education for the past 16 years as a volunteer, a private and public school teacher, a late night director and an instructional coach. She has worked with students from all-African American to highly diverse to predominantly Caucasian. Erin speaks four languages and was raised in the Netherlands, which gives her the ability to relate to a variety of audiences. Erin has experience in working with students from 5th grade through high school. Erin received state recognition as the most innovative foreign language teacher in 2006 and then national recognition as the Milken Educator for Washington State in 2007. Her particular passion is working with students in urban communities.
Erin was hired in 2008 as the Director for the Center for the Improvement of Student Learning, where her focus was on creating a repository of best-practices and building bridges between schools, families and communities. She also participated in Washington’s 2008 achievement gap studies. Erin has recently been promoted to Assistant Superintendent of Student Achievement at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction. In this role, Erin is the point person at OSPI for the work around the achievement gap and dropout prevention in Washington state.
Erin is married to James Jones, who is working on his master’s in teaching and plans to become an ELL teacher. She and James live in Lacey and have three teen-age children.

Walla Walla High School artist to be honored tonight (Friday, May 20) by State Superintendent Dorn
Walla Walla High School Senior Madison Filan will join high school artists from around the state tonight at the 38th Annual Superintendent’s High School Art Show celebration. Students are being recognized for their individual creativity and vision by State Superintendent Randy Dorn at the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction building in Olympia. This year’s theme is, “Artistic Genius in Washington State!”
Filan has won with his piece titled “Grass Land” that was created in 3D space. His piece was selected as the “SBE Choice.”
The State Board of Education (SBE) and the Professional Educator’s Standards Board (PESB) pieces will go to their offices once they have been on display in the OSPI foyer for one year following the awards presentation. Madison’s piece will be purchased for $200. Madison plans to attend the Seattle Art Institute next year.
This year 108 regional winners, their families and teachers will be honored at the state event. Walla Walla High School Career and Technical Education Director Kirk Jameson and Technology Teacher Dennis DeBroeck will be in attendance to support Filan.
Dorn, in his third year of involvement in the Art Show, selected “Cherry Bliss” by Erica Erwin of Richland High School for the Superintendent’s Award. Erwin’s art teacher is Mr. Shawn Murphy.
Guest speakers and award presenters will include state education leaders and arts education association leaders from across the state, such as:

- Kathe Taylor, interim executive director, State Board of Education

The regional winners were chosen for statewide competition from about 4,000 pieces through regional art shows at each of the state’s nine educational service districts. The 14 state winning pieces will be displayed in the foyer of the OSPI building for a year before going into staff offices. Ten pieces will be added to OSPI’s permanent collection, which will total 316 pieces.

New High School Financial Algebra course
Beginning next school year, high school students will have another option to continue in mathematical literacy with Tuesday night’s adoption of High School Financial Algebra. Teacher Scott Reardon will teach two sections of the course next school year. He said lessons will include topics relevant to today’s world including understanding taxes, insurance, mortgages, credit, and loans. Reardon will attend a training this summer in Cincinnati to help prepare for the new course.

Homelink program supports homeschool learning model
Tuesday night Berney Elementary and Homelink Principal Donna Painter reported to the school board as part of a state mandated annual reporting process. Painter said Homelink provides services to 172 students, which equates to 149 full-time equivalent students for budgeting purposes.
Homelink offers art, science, geography, writing and physical education support as part of the program located at Berney Elementary School. Students attend two days a week for supplemental instruction in these areas. Students complete most of their work in a home setting with their parents serving as their teachers. Homelink has five part-time teachers and two full-time certificated staff members who work closely with the parents to monitor student learning plans. Painter said the program needs a different facility to better serve students and families. She said this program serves an important need in Walla Walla and is successful.

Pioneer Middle School student wins career showcase competition
Pioneer Middle School 8th grade student Brelynn Hess reported to school board members Tuesday night on her recent 1st place award in the GEAR UP Career Showcase contest. Hess competed against 16 outstanding students from GEAR UP schools throughout Eastern Washington. She won a trip to the GEAR UP National Conference in San Francisco and a computer desk. Brelynn’s parents are Mark and Kathryn Hess. Her award winning presentation centered on a career as an architect. Brelynn plans to take advanced math and science courses in high school and attend Cooper Union in New York to study architecture.
Garrison Middle School 8th grade student Reed Curcio took second place and won a trip to San Francisco as well. He focused on a career as an Agriculture Engineer.

District to update Bullying Policy
Tuesday night Assistant Superintendent Laure Quaresma reported to school board members the district is revising Policy 3207 - Prohibition of Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying to meet new state requirements.
Quaresma said most of the changes pertain to offering more prevention and intervention strategies and programs in district schools. The school board received the revision for first reading last night and will consider adopting the changes at a future school board meeting.
Next school year, local bullying prevention expert Mark Thompson will meet with all district 5th and 6th grade students to talk about the negative impact of bullying and the importance of civil behavior. He will also meet with students of influence at schools throughout the district to continue efforts to educate students on the serious approach the district is taking to prevent bullying.

Berney Book Drive to support St. Mary’s Cancer Center and Books for Babes program
Berney Elementary students will be collecting gently used books May 23-27 for donation to the Providence St. Mary’s Cancer Center and the Books for Babes program. Berney 5th grade student Anna Moore has had the experience of having family members diagnosed with cancer.
Anna wanted to be able to do something to help children who had to spend time at the hospital. Anna is an avid reader and she felt that being able to donate books would be a great way to give back. If more books are donated than Providence has room for, then the remaining books will be donated to the Books for Babes program.
If any one would like to donate their gently used children’s books, please bring them to Berney Elementary’s front office. Feel free to contact Becky Jo Curtis, Intervention Specialist or Kristen Duede, Counselor, if you have any questions.

Walla Walla High School Journal web site takes second place in WSU competition - By Journal Staff
The Wa-Hi Journal’s website, wahijournal.org, placed second in the 2011 Murrow High School Journalism Contest. The competition is sponsored by The Edward R. Murrow College of Communication at Washington State University each year and recognizes the best high school journalism in Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana and Alaska.
”I was speechless when I heard. We are finally seeing fruit from our labor. Everyone has worked hard to achieve this whether a staff writer, editor or a techie,” Online EIC and Webmaster Madison Nelson said. “We finally figured out how to put video on our website, which most likely helped in the competition. I am looking forward to see what else we will be able to accomplish in the near future.”
The Wa-Hi Journal’s website is created in the journalism class at Walla Walla High School, where students are solely responsible for the content and design of the site. They also produce print issues of The Wa-Hi Journal and update news for the school’s official website, wahibluedevils.org. Junior James Tupper-Bridges spent the 2009-2010 school year researching how to create the school’s website. The website was then officially launched in April of last school year.
This year The Wa-Hi Journal students have consistently placed articles on the website for a faster method of releasing accurate information. They are also using Google documents to speed the editing process, as these documents can be accessed from any computer, anywhere.
The students have cut back on the number of print issues produced this year to focus on their website content. “They are really trying to think online first, print second, as this reflects the industry,” adviser Gay Buissink said. “They really are a dedicated and talented group of students.”

OffenderWatch® a sex offender mapping and alerting service aids citizens in avoiding dangerous homes
In Walla Walla County, there are approximately 135 registered sex offenders. With summer around the corner we encourage citizens to review our website to see which of these offenders live around them. The mapping and address feature found on the website pinpoints exactly where an offender lives and citizens can even sign up for automatic email alerts should an offender move close within any address they register (radius is specified upon registration).
“The benefit of registering for this confidential e-mail alert service allows us to monitor your important addresses for you, thereby keeping you up to date of newly registered offenders and making it unnecessary for you to have to check your important addresses daily or even weekly. You can register any and all of the addresses where your children spend a lot of time, for example friends, grandparents, or babysitters addresses” says Detective Cristal Harris. The alerts are in real-time and sent out via e-mail as soon as a new offender has registered with the Walla Walla County Sheriff’s Office

Congratulations to Sharsptein Elementary 2nd grade student Angel Rebeca Hidalgo for receiving a third place award for her drawing in the contest offered by the Center for Spanish Studies at the University of Washington. Aliverti, Beckel, Siegel and Bledsoe named Graduates of Distinction
Walla Walla Public Schools has chosen this year’s honorees for the Graduates of Distinction program. They are: the late Edward Aliverti, Class of 1950; Lt. Gen. Robert D. Beckel, Class of 1955; Larry B. Siegel, Class of 1968; and Drew M. Bledsoe, Class of 1990.
These individuals have distinguished themselves in their communities, professions or careers and continue to bring honor to the district. Members of the selection committee were Art Griff, Peggy Sanderson, Anne Golden, Doug Bayne, Joshua Gonzales and Mark Higgins.

AVID Club staff versus students charity soccer match tonight

Proceeds for the Blue Devil College Cup will go toward a new Walla Walla High School Scholarship. Donations will be accepted at the match. Pitting Wa-Hi staff against Wa-Hi students in a soccer match for the first time in Wa-Hi history, the College Cup, not only provides a new annual scholarship for future Wa-Hi students, but also provides a unique and fun opportunity for Wa-Hi staff and students to partner together in an entertaining experience that everyone will enjoy. This week Walla Walla High School math teacher Kathy Pritcher is featured as part of the district’s Classroom Close-Up series. A public service announcement radio spot featuring Pritcher is now playing on regional stations.

Blue Mountain Action Council plans food distribution event
A truckload food distribution will be combined with the first local visit of the DSHS state services assistance van in Walla Walla on Wednesday, June 1.
The food distribution will be held 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Walla Walla Housing Authority gym, 501 Cayuse St. (north entrance). Those needing food assistance are asked to bring a box to receive free produce and perishable products, said Kathy Covey, Community Services Director. The event is co-sponsored by Blue Mountain Action Council (BMAC) and Second Harvest of the Inland Northwest. Food provider Second Harvest is based in Spokane.
Those receiving food must self-declare that they are “low-income’ and in need of food; no documentation is required. Food will be given only to those present; extra food cannot be given on behalf of other individuals or families who are unable to attend. No appointment is necessary, and the event will occur rain or shine. Community volunteers will be on hand to assist, Covey said.
The state’s DSHS Mobile Community Services van will also be across the street at Washington Park to provide a variety of social services from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. No appointment is necessary.
The 40-foot Mobile CSO (Community Service Office) van is staffed by experienced financial workers who are able to provide help concerning food stamps, child support, child care, financial and medical services, EBT cards, public assistance programs, and eligibility reviews.

Walla Walla High School student joins Washington Aerospace Scholars summer program
Congratulations to Walla Walla High School student Gregg Heller for being accepted to the Washington Aerospace Scholars summer residency program. Heller completed 10 assignments online to rank in the top 160 out of 291 in the state. His final project was a research paper on the Ion engine and his exhibit was an animation model of the chemical process involved. He used skills from his Tech/Animation class and AP Chem. Heller’s weeklong residency will be July 17-22. Gregg Heller’s parents are Cheryl and Stan Heller
