Edison principal announces retirements
Edison Elementary Principal Nancy Withycombe announced during Tuesday’s school board meeting she is retiring at the end of the school year after nearly 40 years of educational service.
Withycombe has been employed by Walla Walla Public Schools for 18 years. She taught for two years in Prescott, WA and 19 years in Oregon in the Salem and Milton Freewater School Districts.
Prior to taking the head position at Edison, Withycombe was the Principal at Paine Alternative High School. She said being a part of the planning, building and opening the new Edison has been one of the highlights of her career.
“Our staff had a wonderful experience of working with an architect who valued our perceptions of what the new Edison would include,” Withycombe said. “The new school has been a great success.”
Withycombe thanked her staff, the district and school board for their support over the years.

Senior swimmer Merrick Calder established a new school 100 breast stroke record last weekend in winning the District title. He will compete in the State meet in Federal Way this weekend.

Legislative visit leaves many questions unanswered
Superintendent Rich Carter reported to school board members Tuesday night on his recent trip to Olympia to talk with area elected officials. Carter said he sensed an uneasy feeling from legislators as they struggle to balance the budget which faces up to a $2.8 billion deficit.
He said there appears to be a better understanding from legislators about education funding shortfalls, but there are no plans in place to correct it.
Carter stressed public education cannot afford additional cuts. He also presented information about the proposed high school skills center and is requesting $1.2 million for architectural design funds.

Health Services Department supports learning
Health Services Director Jennifer Douglas provided a department update to school board members Tuesday night. She said the health clinics have been busy again this year with nearly 15,000 documented visits to school health clinicians since August. Nearly 500 students in the district have health plans on file and regularly receive medications from health clinicians.
The H1N1 virus and mitigation plan has caused additional work this year for health clinicians. The district has teamed with the Walla Walla County Health Department to organize vaccination clinics at all district schools. To date, 1600 students received H1N1 vaccines at district schools.
Douglas said they continue to use the student records system to improve data collection on students to provide better service. She also extended a thank you to Dr. Ron Will for providing free dental service to 28 students last week. Dr. Will closed his office last Friday to his regular clients so he could provide this day of service to the community. Thousands of dollars of dental work was donated as a result of this effort.

Graduates of Distinction nominations now accepted
Nominations are open for the 2010 Graduates of Distinction Program. All nominations and recommendation forms must be received in the district Curriculum Department by April 15, 2010.
The purpose of the Walla Walla Public Schools’ Graduates of Distinction program is to provide an avenue for recognizing high school graduates of Walla Walla Public Schools who have distinguished themselves in their communities, professions, or careers; and to honor the Walla Walla Public Schools’ staff members who were the most inspirational in the lives of those individuals.
In order to be eligible for nomination, an individual must have graduated from high school in the Walla Walla Public Schools at least 10 years prior to nomination. The recognition is intended to honor Walla Walla High School graduates for outstanding achievement. The honor will be given to mature adults who are exemplary citizens and have distinguished themselves in their communities, their professions, or their careers.
Nominations will be held for five years, and will automatically be included in the selection process during that time.

Staff development key to district technology plan
School board members approved the district’s 2010-2013 Technology and Learning Plan Tuesday night after Technology Director Janis Barton presented a report on the process used to develop the state required plan.
Barton organized a Technology Advisory Committee to assist in the process. This year Barton scheduled two Technology and Learning Plan forums to develop, refine and finalize school and district level plans.
Barton reported staff development is essential to ensuring technology is being integrated into lesson plans and daily work in the classroom. She said the 2010-2013 technology plan will have more emphasis on training staff.
Pocket iNet Owner Todd Brandenburg also presented during last night’s school board meeting. He said he has a new perspective on what technology can do to support learning. Brandenburg said a visit to the new Edison Elementary to watch a kindergarten and 5th grade class in action had an impact on him.
He said the school’s technology helped keep the students engaged and excited about learning. He said he will help the district in it’s efforts to bring even more technology to the classroom.

Future Business Leaders of America students tune up for state competition
Walla Walla High School’s chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) recently competed in the Southeast Region Winter Leadership Conference at Connell High School. The competition included over 40 events, with approximately 200 competitors representing 12 area schools. The Blue Devils were represented by 21 chapter members who recorded 29 top five places in their events.
“Every year I am amazed at what the kids are able to accomplish, and this was no exception,” said Wa-Hi FBLA adviser Scott Reardon. “They come off the stage after placing and I have this very real shocked look on my face. All of the FBLA students worked hard to get here and should be very proud of their accomplishments. I was most pleased with what we were able to do in the speaking events, because the competition is pretty tough in those areas.”

Host families needed for Japanese exchange students
Chairman of the Walla Walla-Sasayama Sister City Affiliation Committee Robert Keatts is seeking host families to support the Walla Walla-Sasayama Sister Cities exchange student program. Students are arriving March 24 and will be departing April 3.
“We are urgently seeking host families,” Keatts said. “We would like to have host families confirmed by March 1. A host family meeting will be arranged after that time.”

Prospect Point student organizes Helping Hands for Haiti coin drive
Prospect Point Elementary 4th grade student Paige Gardner has organized the school’s “Helping Hands for Haiti” coin drive in collaboration with the Red Cross. She pitched her idea to Principal Chris Gardea as a student body project. With Gardea’s approval, she has helped promote the idea with her own announcements to the school each morning.Gardner’s teacher is Karen Watson.
“She definitely exhibits the traits we recognize as one of our Shining Stars,” Gardea said.

Blue Ridge takes steps to improve student academic achievement
Tuesday night Blue Ridge Elementary Principal Kim Doepker reported to school board members on efforts underway this year at Blue Ridge to improve the school’s achievement rates. She said Blue Ridge is making the changes necessary to improve.
Doepker said last year 4th grade students scored 29% on their MAP scores and are at 64% this year. Math scores are up this year nearly 40% from 27% last year to 66% this year. Doepker said Blue Ridge has a great staff, wonderful students and a bright future.

JROTC Drill and Rifle Team competition updates
The Walla Walla High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Rifle Team is at Camp Perry, Ohio this week to compete in the Army JROTC Nationals Meet. Teams from A/JROTC programs all over the world travel to Ohio to go head-to-head with the best air rifle marksmen throughout the program.
The competition can be tracked shot by shot, competitor by competitor, on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 18/19, 2010, at the website for the event host, the U.S. Civilian Marksmanship Program. Blue Ridge Elementary teacher earns Delta Kappa Gamma award
Blue Ridge Elementary second grade teacher Paula Nichols is receiving the Golden Gift Scholarship Award from Delta Kappa Gamma to attend a two-week leadership and management seminar in Austin, Texas this summer.
Nichols was one of only 30 women selected for this all expenses paid award. Nichols competed against women from all Delta Kappa Gamma chapters in 17 different countries. The award application process included stating her role in the Delta Kappa Gamma society, Nichols’ community involvement record and a description of how she would use her improved leadership skills. She also needed recommendations from her principal and the president of her previous Delta Kappa Gamma group.
“The seminar is conducted by experts in the field of leadership and management,” Nichols said. “It is a very intense two week seminar.”
Nichols is a member of the recently formed local Walla Walla chapter, Alpha Gamma. This chapter was organized last summer and met for the first time in October. Currently there are 17 members in the Walla Walla chapter. Nichols says she hopes the group will increase to 35 members.
The local chapter Alpha Gamma meets on the second Tuesday of each month for dinner at a local restaurant, according to Nichols. There are currently members from Touchet, Prescott, and Waitsburg, but Nichols said they would like to have members from Dayton and College Place.
“Each month we plan a program that is beneficial and entertaining to educators,” Nichols said. “We want to be able to give a scholarship to a high school senior in the valley who is interested in going into the field of education.”

Walla Walla High School students to compete in State Debate Tournament by Coach Jean Tobin
Walla Walla High School’s new Debate Team will send seven students to the State Debate Tournament after a successful competition at the District 5/6 State Qualifying Tournament held February 12th and 13th at Chiawana High School in Pasco. Wa-Hi students competed against students from Yakima, Pasco, Moses Lake, Wenatchee, Othello and Leavenworth. Although novices, all students competed in the top division, Open, in order to qualify for State.
Walla Walla High School qualified the maximum number of students (2) allowed for any school in Lincoln- Douglas debate. Madeline Bronstein (freshman) placed 2nd and Calvin Brigham (freshman) placed 3rd.. Clement Cantil (sophomore) took 4th place and is an alternate. The topic that students debated at the District tournament and will debate at State is Resolved: In the United States the principle of jury nullification is a just check on government. The debaters had only a week and half to research and prepare arguments before the District competition.
In Individual Events almost every member of the Wa-Hi team qualified for State. In order to qualify students needed to place in the top six of their event. In Expository speaking three Wa-Hi students qualified for State: Carrie Moore (freshman) (5th), Madeline Bronstein (3rd), and Hope Grant-Herriot (freshman) (1st). Rosa Tobin (freshman) took 5th and qualified in Original Oratory. Three student qualified in Impromptu speaking: Madeline Bronstein (6th), Clement Cantil (4th) and Machado Mijiga (sophomore)(2nd). In Interpretative Reading Hope Grant-Herriot (4th) and Calvin Brigham (3rd) both qualified. Additionally Bryan Preston (freshman) and Kera Parsons (freshman) are both alternates: Bryan in Impromptu and Kera in Interpretive Reading.
Walla Walla High School earned 2nd place in Individual Events Sweepstakes, a team honor that is awarded based on the total number of points earned by all team members. Coach Jean Tobin commented, “I set a team goal of sending at least one team member to State this year but never anticipated sending almost every team member and earning a team award in the first year of competition. This is an amazing group of students and all our team members have worked hard. They all deserve recognition.”
Additional team members include: Marisol Beck (freshman), Julia Cosma (freshman), Nic Clifton (junior) and Ty Holmes (junior). Fred Moore and Mukulu Mwea (parents of team members) attended the District tournament to help judge events.
“Our success would not have been possible without the help of a dedicated group of parents (Fred Moore, Annie Capestany & Mark Beck, Heidi & John Brigham, Mukulu Mwea, John Wong and Brian Gabbard), Whitman College (specifically Jim Hanson and Bob Withycombe), Superintendent Rich Carter, and the amazing support of fellow teachers and many members of the Walla Walla community,” said Jean Tobin.
The State Individual Event tournament is March 12th and 13th at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. The State Debate Tournament is the following weekend, March 19th and 20th, also at U.P.S. in Tacoma. Students will be working to raise money to attend the tournament. Any donations are greatly appreciated (checks made out the Wa-Hi Debate Club).

Garrison Middle School students honored for academic achievement
Garrison Middle School held their annual Academic Achievement Assembly to recognize honor roll students, students with perfect attendance, and students who display the 3 R characteristics of Respect, Responsibility, and Doing the Right Thing.
Sixth grade teacher Greg Reid, who will retire at the end of this school year with 41 years of teaching experience, spoke to the students about the importance of kind words and treating each other with respect.
A total of 427 students were recognized for being on the honor roll with a GPA of 3.0 to 4.0. Fifty-eight students were recognized for Perfect Attendance for the first half of the school year.

Explorer Program nominations now accepted
Explorer Program nominations are now being accepted for the 2010-2011 school year. Information on the program for gifted and talented students is available in both English and Spanish on the district web site under the Support Programs/Explorers link: www.wwps.org/programs/explorers.htm
Information sheets, along with parent nomination forms, have been sent to schools. They are available in English and Spanish. Contact your child’s teacher for more information. He or she will be able to help you decide if your child is a good candidate for this rigorous education program.
The deadline for nominations is March 10, 2010. All nominated students will take a norm-referenced standardized test at their school and those who qualify for further testing will participate in cognitive abilities testing in a central location. In all cases, parents will be notified of the results of the process, and a child not selected one year may be re-nominated in following years.

Kindergarten and Open Enrollment Registration period is Monday, March 15 to Friday, March 26
Kindergarten registration will be conducted at the student’s attendance area elementary school. Parents wishing to pick up the kindergarten registration information may do so at your child’s school beginning March 8. However, the completed registration forms will not be accepted until March 15.
New Student Registration Hours:
Monday, March 15, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
March 16 - March 26, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Parents/guardians who wish to open enroll their child to a school outside of their attendance area may pick up open enrollment application forms at their attendance area school during normal business hours beginning March 8; however, forms will not be accepted in the receiving school until Monday, March 15.
If there is space available to accommodate open enrollment requests, then the priorities outlined in School Board Policy No. 3130 will be used to determine movement of a student. School Board Policy manuals are available for public viewing at all Walla Walla Public Schools and the Administration Office. Music boosters plan Citrus Sale fundraiser
The Walla Walla Music Boosters is holding a Citrus Sale during throughout the month of February. The goal is to sell a semi-truck load of Texas Red Grapefruit, Navel Oranges, Juice Oranges and Tangelos.

- Half case for $20
- Full case for $35

Art Regier Outstanding Volunteers of the Years Award nominations accepted
Nominations are being accepted through Friday, March 26 for the Art Regier Outstanding Volunteers of the Year Award. Recipients will be recognized at the April 20 school board meeting. Nomination forms are available at all Walla Walla Public Schools and the district office.
Criteria for selection may include the following:
1. Exceptional service or contributions to the children of Walla Walla Public Schools
2. Unusual dedication
3. Demonstration of care, compassion and empathy
Recipients of the Art Regier Outstanding Volunteer Award will be honored with a plaque to display at their home or place of business, and their name will be permanently affixed to a memorial plaque in the school district’s board room at 364 South Park Street.
