Students are required to have a signed parent permission form on file in order to access services. Walla Walla Public Schools provides no funding or operational support of the Lincoln Health Center. St. Mary Medical Center is the primary funding source for the program.

“Walla Walla Public Schools school board members, administration and staff embrace the mission of the Lincoln Health Center and are grateful to this community-based group for bringing these services to Walla Walla to support the needs of at-risk youth in the community,” Superintendent Rich Carter said. “This just proves a small group with a large vision can make a difference.”

Jordan reported the district logged 5808.27 Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) students on the first official enrollment count for the 2009-2010 school year. These figures do not include Alternative Education Program (AEP) or Running Start students. Last fall the district reported 5801.74 FTEs for the September 2008 enrollment count. Enrollment this fall is up at elementary schools, down at middle schools, up slightly at Walla Walla High School and down at Lincoln Alternative High School.

The cameras will be strategically placed throughout the schools and used to promote safety and support emergency plans.
Pioneer Principal Dana Jones says the cameras are a welcome addition.

“We’ve been talking about this for a long time,” Jones said. “They will help.”

Blue Ridge: Staff will focus on the need for standards-based formative assessments to support performance-based learning; promoting professional learning teams to create common performance-based assessments; and give teachers hands-on experience at defining the power standards, creating checklists and rubrics for instruction. The LID activities will be from 7:45 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. in the Blue Ridge Library.

Blue Ridge PreSchool – 8:30-10:30, Assessment Tool, implementation planning and how the data can be used; 10:30-11:30, Native Language Instruction, opportunities during class time, groupings in each section, ideas on improving; 12:30-1:30, Second Steps Curriculum, what your plan looks like for implementation; 1:30-End of Day, nuts and bolts of first week of program, intervention needs and planning for RTI groups.

Edison: The LID Day will be divided into 3 parts.  From 8:30 - 10:00, Mark Thompson will be doing
diversity training; from 10:15 - 11:30, STAT referral protocols, review operation of new school and
discuss changes/solve problems, tech information from Martin Telstad; 12:30 – 2:30, Standards Based Instruction, Kay Barga, Mary Klein, Jo Anna Gogl, Judy Peasley, Martin Telstad and Nancy Withcombe.

Green Park: Staff will be updating their school-wide behavioral support (BEST) program. They will also be training staff on how to use the strategies, 50% of their staff have been hired since the program was implemented. Also, for the 1.5 building directed work days, they will meet for two-hour sessions throughout the year focusing on Outcome Based Assessment and student improvement. The sessions will be held from 4-6 p.m. over a five-month period.

Prospect Point will be working with Diana Erickson to start curriculum mapping in reading, writing, and math. The teachers will be meeting in grade level teams to map out the year, determine learning outcomes, and identify key vocabulary to be taught in each trimester. This work will continue throughout the year as we move to standards based grading and reporting.

Sharptein Elementary: Goal conferencing with families.

Garrison and Pioneer: Staff will participate in training around how to identify Power Standards in each of their content areas. Utilize district and state standards for specific content areas and collaborate to begin identifying standards for each quarter of instruction for the 2009-10 school year. Each building is in the process of putting in place the structures for Response to Intervention (RTI). The afternoon will be spent reviewing student data, both behavioral and academic, identifying needs and implementing interventions for the first quarter. This will be a school-wide process and the first of our four school-wide CAST meetings.

Lincoln: Staff will participate in learning what strategies were used to move Level 1 students to Level 3; staff will receive a notebook to support their mission on lower classroom discipline referrals and empower teachers in the classroom; Choosing Civility books will be handed out to staff; staff will participate in a discussion of mapping out the Rules of Civility for their students and making it a building focus; there will be a quick review of H1N1 Swine Virus, and a review of ‘Focus of Concerns.’ The afternoon will be dedicated to collaboration or working on lesson planning.

Walla Walla High School: Staff will be looking at student data (what does it all mean, and how do they interpret the information) from 8:30-10:00; connecting the dots (what programs do they have in place to help their students - RTI, GLAD, AVID, SLP, PLC, SST…) from 10-00-11:30; Session I, 12:00-1:00; Session II, 1:00-2:00; Session III, 2:00-3:00; teachers will rotate through three difference sessions: AVID Instructional Strategies, GLAD strategies, Evaluating Effectiveness of PLC; Wrap Up, 3:00-3:30.

The book fair will be open each day from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. and feature a wide range of books for young teens and adults, including mystery and adventure novels, fantasy trilogies, sports guides, magazines, and the latest bestsellers from more than 150 publishers. Parents, children, teachers, and the community are invited to attend.

On Monday, September 21st from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., the book fair will feature a Sneak Peek for teachers to stop by and look at this year’s book selection.
Student volunteers, dubbed the Crew, help run it. From creating merchandising displays to managing inventory and assisting shoppers with their selections, Crew members learn real life skills while helping to make reading for pleasure a cool activity at their school.

“Our Student Crew is working very hard to put on a great book fair event – one that promotes literacy and reading, while at the same time raising money for much-needed school resources,” said Michelle Higgins, Crest Club adviser at Walla Walla High School.
Sponsorships are available. Area businesses interested in making a donation are asked to contact Michelle Higgins at 509-527-3020. Proceeds from the fair will also be used to support Crest Club’s various community-service activities this year and book donations will be made to the YWCA Women’s Shelter.

Cortinas used hands-on activities to keep the students engaged. Fifth grade student Angeles Hernandez demonstrated to school board members how she learned the parts of the human eye. By using cut out paper parts and detailed information labels, Hernandez illustrated what she had learned. She had so much fun at summer camp, she is encouraging Cortinas to start a Science Club at Sharpstein.
