Hundreds of Walla Walla High School seniors successfully complete culminating project requirement
This week hundreds of Walla Walla High School seniors took another step toward earning their diplomas by completing their required culminating projects. The projects showcase their best school work, personal interests, volunteerism and post-high school plans. Associate Principal Mira Gobel says nearly 300 people have volunteered to be judges. Volunteers include community and business leaders, parents, district staff and relatives.

“What a statement for our community,” Gobel said. “I would say 90 percent of the volunteers also participated last year. They really wanted to be a part of this experience again. It’s a real partnership.”

Parents, former teachers and relatives also come to share in the senior project experience. Students say they want their guests to know they made a difference in their lives. There will be two more opportunities for students to participate next month. Successful completion of the culminating project is a graduation requirement.

Superintendent Rich Carter seeks to build relationships with parent leaders
Nearly 30 parent leaders recently spent an evening with Superintendent Rich Carter to discuss building relationships through parent involvement. Carter updated the parents on issues the district is facing. He also shared the district’s Parent Involvement Guidelines before leading an open discussion on how the district and parents can better work together.

“It was a great first step and we plan to build on it,” Carter said. “We know parent involvement in our schools is key to our success. We want to help make this experience positive and productive.”

Next Steps:
Communications Director Mark Higgins will work with school board member Cindy Meyer to organize follow-up meetings for elementary and secondary PTA/parent leaders. These meeting are expected to be held in early March. Parents are encouraged to talk with their PTA leaders, school principal or Communications Director Mark Higgins (mhiggins@wwps.org) about attending.
