School board authorizes district to apply for snow days waiver
School board members Tuesday night authorized the district to submit an application to the state for a waiver to excuse the four snow days missed as a result of this winter’s record storms.

This school board action provides the district more options. No decisions were made on how or if the waiver would be used if approved.

The district could excuse all four days, some of the days or none of the days at all. The waiver will be reviewed by the Office of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The district hopes to have an answer within the next week.
School board members are expected to make a decision at the next school board meeting, Tuesday, February 17.

Extending the school year provides challenges for the district, most notably the possibility of changing the Walla Walla High School graduation date.

2009 kindergarten and fall Open Enrollment registration dates set
Walla Walla Public Schools Kindergarten and Open Enrollement period is Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27, 2009. Kindergarten registration will be conducted at the student’s attendance area elementary school. New elementary and middle school boundaries take affect in the fall of 2009.

New Student Registration Hours:
Monday, March 16
7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

March 17 — March 27
8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Parents/guardians who wish to open enroll their child to a school outside of their attendance area may pick up an open enrollment application form at their attendance area school during normal business hours beginning March 9; however, the form will not be accepted in the receiving school until Monday, March 16.

If there is space available to accommodate open enrollment requests, then the priorities outlined in School Board Policy No. 3130 will be used to determine movement of a student. School Board Policy manuals are available for public viewing at all Walla Walla Public Schools and the Administration Office. School Board policies are also online at http://www.wwps.org/leadership/board.htm#11

Please contact your attendance area school for more information. District boundary maps are available at all

Walla Walla High School students honored at CWU Jazz Festival
Congratulations to the following students who were named Outstanding Soloists this past Friday at the Central Washington University Jazz Festival:

Nick Walsh - Bari Sax
Machado Mijiga - Alto Sax
Cameron Yancey - Trombone
Tom Callister - Vibes
Dustin Taylor - Guitar

“The CWU Jazz Festival is not a competitive festival with winners and runners up,” Band Director Andrew Ueckert said. “However, they do read off the names of each student who was nominated to be an outstanding soloist at the end of the day, and of the 24 high school jazz bands who performed, Wa-Hi tied Pasco and Hanford for having the most Outstanding Soloist Awards given out. The entire Jazz Band also received an Outstanding Jazz Band Certificate as well! Way to go Wa-Hi Jazz Band.”
