Community leadership sought for high school study
School board members will soon begin contacting community members to serve on a Task Force to help the district conduct a comprehensive study of the high school experience. School board members are seeking names of community members (with contact information if possible) who might be interested in serving.
Send names to Marilyn Brown in the Superintendent’s Office (526-6715 or mbrown@wwps.org) The following areas, and others, are expected to be studied by the High School Task Force.

Kindergarten Open Houses begin
Elementary schools began holding their kindergarten open houses this week. Green Park’s was Thursday, April 26th. Prospect Point has one scheduled for 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 9th. Edison will host prospective kindergarten students and their parents at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22nd. Blue Ridge will have a kindergarten open house at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 6th.
Berney is not having an open house this year, but kindergarten assessments will take place after school on May 21st and 22nd, and prospective students/parents will have an opportunity to meet teachers and see classrooms at that time.
Sharpstein is holding a meeting for dual kindergarten students this spring, and there will be a back to school ice cream social right before school starts in the fall. Students are invited to bring school supplies to the social and there is time for them to meet their new teachers and see their new classrooms.

Wa-Hi cadets host & win all-service JROTC in weekend Northwest Conference drill & marksmanship championship meet
The Walla Walla High School JROTC “Blue Devil” cadet battalion hosted the all-service Northwest Conference Drill and Marksmanship Championships last weekend and captured top honors in several categories, including overall team excellence.
Wa-Hi cadets competed against 1,200 cadets from 32 schools around the Pacific Northwest and took first place honors in the color guard and precision shooting categories. Color guard team members were: Naomi Dunham, Alexa Hummel, Shadow Kobrich, and Stacie Chong. Teams represented schools with Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine JROTC detachments.
Walla Walla students also took 5th place in sporter team shooting, 4th place for commander of unarmed drill team, and 5th place in unarmed drill team. Individual shooters on the precision marksmanship team and their honors were: Amber Criss – 2nd, TaMaka Swartout – 4th, and Geoff Lewis – 5th. The Wa-Hi sporter shooting team came in 5th.
Other awards went to Burlington Navy JROTC – 2nd in precision shooting and Kentwood Marine Corps JROTC – 1st place sporter shooting. To see a slide show of the competition, visit: http://wwhs.wwps.org/ and click on the JROTC patch.

Wa-Hi Drama Department presents “The Crucible”

Cost: $6 - Students & senior citizens / $8 adults
Tickets: WWHS Auditorium Box Office open April 23-May 11 / Monday-Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. and one hour before curtain time.
About the play...
The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller in 1953, is a haunting illustration of what happens when personal responsibility for evil is denied. Set in 1692 during the Salem Witch Trials, it was meant to reflect upon the McCarthy witch hunts of the 1950s and is a sobering look at the problem of guilt by association. It opens with a Puritan town’s conservative minister witnessing a group of young girls participating in forbidden revelry. The minister summons a clergyman who specializes in witchcraft to the town, and he is able to draw out a confession from a young maid who says she has made a pact with the devil. Soon the other girls confess and begin accusing those who cross or disbelieve them, and the town is torn apart by hatred and paranoia. The lengths to which the characters will go to eradicate perceived wickedness from the community will send shivers down your spine. This will be a performance you will not want to miss!

Edison students to perform Three Billy Goats Gruff tonight
Edison third grade students are performing “Three Billy Goats Gruff” to raise money for their community service project, Books for Babes. The performance is Friday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Edison gym.
