Higgins named to lead Safe Schools efforts
Communications Director Mark Higgins was recently named to head the district’s Safe Schools program in a move to centralize these critical operations.
Higgins, with the assistance of Wa-Hi Assistant Principals Matt Bona and Brett Cox and community bullying and harassment prevention specialist Mark Thompson, will oversee the district’s Comprehensive Crisis Plan utilizing Incident Command System management protocols.
A Safe Schools Committee consisting of fire, police, disaster, mental health, medical and school administration experts has been formed and is scheduled to meet Tuesday, October 24 to discuss safe schools issues and review crisis procedures.
“The district has an excellent safety and crisis management record,” Higgins said. “Schools are safe places, but at any time we need to be prepared for natural disasters or other types of crises. Our staff and students deserve safe learning environments and we are committed to ensuring they have the tools and training to effectively manage crisis situations.”
District and school crisis plans focus on prevention, crisis management and post-crisis recovery.

District students earn Roberta Abraham Music Scholarships
Eight district students recently earned Roberta Abraham Music Scholarships to help advance their skills through private music lessons. Scholarships are made available to students in grades 6-12 based on musical ability, need, and dedication to the public school music program. Scholarship recipients receive $160 towards private music lessons.
“Roberta Abraham was an exceptional person who touched the lives of many people in Walla Walla through music,” District Music Coordinator Roger Garcia said. “Her career as a music teacher in Walla Walla Public Schools was devoted to helping and inspiring young people so that they could reach their potential as musicians.”
There have been over 200 recipients of this scholarship. This year the district music department has planned a clinic setting for middle school vocal students. Music professionals will be brought in to work with select students several times during the year.

Wa-Hi band takes first place in Leavenworth festival
Last Saturday the Walla Walla High School Blue Devil Marching Band traveled to Leavenworth for the annual Autumn Leaf Festival Parade and came away 1st place winners in the AAAA Band Division. The last time the band went to Leavenworth, in 2004, they also won their division.
Each band in the parade is judged in both a pre-parade inspection for appearance and ability to follow the general drum major commands, as well as musically, playing their drum cadences and songs. Each band is also scored during the parade for precision of marching and quality of sound and so forth.
The Drum Majors for this year’s band are seniors Mariana Cains and Kristen Griffith and Drum Captain is Jeremy Ueckert. The band is directed by Wa-Hi band instructor Andrew Ueckert.
“They represented themselves, their school and community very well,” Ueckert said.

“Let’s Talk Schools — We’re Listening” survey online
“Let’s Talk Schools — We’re Listening,” the district’s information gathering campaign, begins this fall to involve the community in a facilities needs study in light of last May’s bond issue failure.
