School board approves K-5 Reading Curriculum
Publisher Harcourt Brace selected to supply materials

School board members Tuesday night concluded a year’s worth of staff work by adopting the district’s K-5 reading curriculum. Assistant Superintendent Linda Boggs said this adoption is the first step in developing a K-12 Literacy Plan in support of student achievement data which reinforces reading is at the heart of learning.

Boggs assembled a Reading Review Committee last fall to conduct the research necessary for this important work. This group of 30 plus district educators, co-chaired by Title One Coordinator Judy Peasley, worked this school year to identify a strong core reading program that addresses the needs of the majority of district learners.

Boggs said the district’s Reading Review Committee unanimously agreed Harcourt Brace was the publisher of choice to supply the learning materials in support of the K-5 Reading adoption. She said the committee determined the current core reading program, MacMillan, was adequate if students were on track and becoming readers.

“However, these materials did not adequately address instructional needs for our below and above grade level students,” Boggs said.

Harcourt learning materials are offered in both English and Spanish. Boggs said it was important to have quality materials in both languages. She went on to say committee members felt strongly Harcourt offered this level of service.

The committee’s work which led to the K-5 Reading adoption is also supporting professional development efforts to enhance the district’s K-12 Literacy Plan.

The purchase of the K-5 instructional materials may be staged out over two years, with grade levels demonstrating the greatest need getting new materials first.

Boggs thanked all the Reading Review Committee members for their hard work and said their efforts will help students in our district develop a love for reading and school.
