District administrators complete two-day Leadership Academy
District administrators spent Monday and Tuesday reflecting on the past school year and planning for 2006-2007 during the annual Leadership Academy. Topics discussed ranged from budget planning, best practices for instructional strategies, new teacher support programs and implementing procedures for the district’s new Nutrition and Physical Fitness procedures.
District administrators also reported on gains made this school year and explained how they were aligned with the district’s five-year strategic plan.
District administrators also bid longtime District Music Director Glen Mitchell a fond farewell. Mitchell is retiring after serving the district for more than 30 years. A follow-up Leadership Academy is scheduled for mid-August. District administrators will focus on start of school tasks and other business in preparation of the new school year.

Garrison band teacher named district music coordinator
Congratulations to Garrison Band Teacher Roger Garcia for being named the district’s music coordinator. Garcia will assume some of the duties previously held by Glen Mitchell who retired this summer.
Garcia will remain at Garrison as the school’s band teacher and will be released for a portion of his school day to perform coordinator duties.

New Wa-Hi Assistant Principal resigns position
Recently named Wa-Hi Assistant Principal Jim Boyce resigned his position due to personal reasons. School board members acted on his resignation at the June 20 school board meeting.
The search for a new Wa-Hi Assistant Principal is underway.

Wa-Hi FFA members provide school board members with end of year report
Walla Walla High School Future Farmers of America program remained strong last school year as reported to school board members Tuesday night.
Advisor Mike Martin said enrollment in the program continues to climb. With 240 students, the Wa-Hi Chapter is the 2nd largest in the state. This year the FFA Marketing Team took first place in the state and nation, while the Tractor Driving, Floral, and Agriculture Issues won at the state level. Martin said the support from the community, school board, district and school administration are keys to the program’s successes.

Berney Music teacher loses son-in-law in Afghanistan
Walla Walla Public Schools expresses its deepest sympathy to Berney Elementary Music Teacher Elizabeth Arebalos-Jagelski on the loss of her son-in-law, 1st Lt. Forrest Ewens, husband of Elizabeth’s daughter, 1st Lt. Megan (Jagelski) Ewens. He was killed in Afghanistan last Friday.
A memorial is planned for Ewens at Gig Harbor, WA. Elizabeth and her family will then go to Fort Drum, NY for another ceremony and then to Arlington Cemetery where he will be buried.

WASL Summer Institute begins next week
Summer Institute, six weeks of specialized instruction in reading, writing and math, will be offered at Wa-Hi to current tenth graders who scored in Level 2 in a particular area. Students must score in level 3 to meet standards for the Washington Assessment of Student Learning in all areas to meet new state graduation requirements.
Classes will be offered at no cost to students, June 28 – August 3, Monday thru Thursday, 8 – 11 a.m. Contact Wa-Hi Assistant Principal Mira Gobel at 527-3020 for specifics.

August WASL retakes scheduled
The August WASL will be administered August 7-10, 2006, at Wa-Hi (reading, math and writing only). Online registration is now available through July 9 at: www.k12.wa.us/waslregistration or by toll-free phone 1-866-400-WASL (9275).
The August WASL is open to any current tenth or eleventh grader who wishes to retake the assessment and registers in advance. Participation in the Summer Institute in not a prerequisite for taking the August WASL.
Students must be able to give their Secure Student Identifier (SSID) 10 digit ID number when they register. Contact District Assessment Director Ron Higgins at 526-6707 for more information.
