School year ends (E-News to continue during summer break)
Thursday marked the end of another outstanding school year. Congratulations to the 431 graduates from the Class of 2006 and good luck in the future. These graduates earned more than $1.6 million dollars in college scholarships.

Returning students will have numerous positive summer programs to choose from over summer break. Visit the district website throughout the summer to keep up with district news and activities.

Board reviews preliminary budget
District takes steps to trim spending

After dipping into reserves to the tune of $1.1 million last fiscal year to balance the General Fund budget, administrators and staff have worked as a team this school year to develop a budget for next year to bring expenditures in line with revenue.

Business Manager Aron Rausch said in his report at Tuesday night’s meeting to the school board members on the district’s preliminary 2006-2007 budget the reductions were necessary to ensure fiscal stability.

This school year Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bill Jordan and Assistant Superintendent Linda Boggs led the district through a budget trimming process which netted more than $1 million in spending reductions.

This team effort to trim expenditures began last fall as Administrative Council members were briefed by Superintendent Rich Carter on the need to reduce spending to meet the school board’s call for a three to five percent cash reserve.
After receiving direction, Jordan and Boggs began a series of meetings with staff to find ways to save money. Their efforts resulted in numerous internal personnel shifts and creative cost cutting efforts in supplies, equipment purchases and contractual services.

Through it all, no staff members lost their jobs through Reduction In Force maneuvers, as all staff adjustments were made through attrition from retirements or positions becoming vacant for other reasons.

Rausch said the preliminary 2006-2007 General Fund budget is balanced, accept for approximately $300,000 in special education expenses over revenue which is expected to correct itself once federal “Safety Net” dollars for those programs come in.

Rausch said the trend to continue reducing and re-prioritizing expenditures may remain for at least another budget year to ensure adequate cash reserves.

2006-07 Budget Basics
• General Fund: $51,158,013

• Enrollment Projections: 5,665 FTE (down 30)
(5,695 FTE projections for 05-06)

• Staffing: 397.4 Certificated / 237.8 Classified

• District Fiscal Year: September 1 to August 31

Wa-Hi senior gets personal graduation ceremony
Wa-Hi senior Alex Anderson had his own personal graduation ceremony this week as he received his diploma in full cap and gown at Tuesday’s school board meeting.

A medical condition kept him from participating in the June 2 Wa-Hi ceremony. Good luck Alex!

• Arlene Moreno
Edison Elementary Secretary

• Norb Rossi
Wa-Hi Choral Director

• Kathy Lamb

• Judy Peasley
District Title One Coordinator - Special Programs

• Doug Venneri
Pioneer Middle School 6th grade teacher

Staff Achievement Grant Winners are nominated and chosen by teachers and support staff for superior performance, innovation; exemplary leadership; exceptional service or contributions to the Walla Walla Public Schools. No administrators are included in the selection process. Staff Achievement Grant Winners receive a $1,000 stipend and five days of paid release time for professional growth activities. These outstanding educators are recognized by their peers as the best of the best. Congratulations!

Here’s what Deputy Superintendent Dr. Bill Jordan said about each recipient at today’s All Staff Celebration Breakfast...

Arlene Moreno - Edison Elementary Secretary
Since first impressions are often the most lasting, it's important to get it right the first time or forever pay the consequences. At Edison Elementary, Arlene Moreno makes sure this is never an issue. Arlene's professional manner and appearance welcome people to Edison and communicate a message that the school is a safe learning environment and that the staff care about students and their families.

Arlene is a tidy person known for her organizational skills. One of her nominators said she would easily earn the "neatest desk award." In addition to completing endless clerical tasks each day, she also fills in as nurse, counselor, tutor, teacher, messenger, inside recess patrol and friend to all.

She even spends time working with struggling readers and learners during recess time so they can catch up. Arlene does all this despite working in less than ideal conditions. Her positive attitude makes Edison an inviting and cheerful place for everyone.

Thank you for all you do to help make Walla Walla the premiere school district in the state.

Norb Rossi (Choral Director - Wa-Hi)
Going the extra mile is definitely a philosophy Wa-Hi Choral Director Norb Rossi puts into action each day. Mr. Rossi's students learn far more than music.

They learn the value of striving to be more than they thought they could be. They learn that improving one's skills takes time and work. They learn to commit themselves to never accept less than their best effort. He also strives to expose his students to world music -- including challenging students to learn music in several languages.

Under Norb's watch the past six years, the choral program has consistently grown in student participation. He has added two new women's ensembles, plus a men's ensemble that meets outside of regular school hours. He is also known for treating everyone he encounters with respect and dignity.

"One of his students and nominators said, "I can think of no man who cares more for the students he teaches and for the music he has instilled in our hearts. I look to this man for strength for he is an example of perseverance to us all."

Thank you Norb for putting kids first and making a positive difference for staff, students and program.

Kathy Lamb (Para-Educator -- Pioneer Middle School)
Look up the word support in the dictionary and you'll get a sense of what Pioneer Para-Educator Kathy Lamb brings to the work place. She is known for being prompt, punctual, hardworking -- and adored by students.

Her nominators say Kathy is a team player who is willing to roll up her sleeves to get the job done. She is a selfless person who can be counted on. She often volunteers to take extra training to improve her skills and was one of the district's first Para-Educators to earn her AA Degree to meet new federal mandates for para-professionals.

She has a unique ability to enter a classroom and immediately survey what needs to be done -- and then do it. One teacher said it's a blessing to have an extra pair of adult sharp eyes, radar ears, and working hands in our room.

Kathy is also known to regularly volunteer to stay after school to help struggling students, work at after-school activities and complete other tasks as assigned to help her school. Her nominators say she is one of the nicest person you'll ever meet.

Thank you for your commitment to our teachers, students, community and entire school district.

Judy Peasley (Title One Coordinator - Special Programs)
Whether Title One Coordinator Judy Peasley is balancing the Title One or LAP budget, leading professional development, modeling teaching best practices strategies for teachers, or planning with new teachers, she always finds time for those who contact her for help, ideas or just to talk.

In addition to Judy's Title One role, she has been active in community education on literacy and getting children ready for kindergarten. This year she co-wrote and won a grant to begin a kindergarten readiness program for Walla Walla families.

One of her nominators said Judy holds an amazing wealth of knowledge, yet is humble, kind and always open to new ideas. Judy has tremendous skills in running a meeting successfully, so that all participants leave knowing they were heard and feel a sense of accomplishment.

She has worked hard the past few years to bring support for reading instruction to the secondary environment. Her work in reading instruction continues with her leadership in the new reading adoption process at the elementary level.

Congratulations to Judy Peasley for outstanding performance and exceptional dedication and service.

Doug Venneri - (6th Grade teacher -- Pioneer Middle School)
If you are looking for a glass half-full type of guy -- then Doug Venneri is your man. For 26 years as an educator his positive attitude has helped make learning fun for students and helps staff feel at ease in the work place. He just finds a way to keep the mood happy.

Doug is more than willing to help his fellow staff members -- especially new teachers. One of his nominators who has been a teacher for 14 years now, said it would have been easy for him to leave the profession after his first year if it were not for Doug Venneri. Despite limited access to learning materials and resources, Doug found materials for him to use, provided helpful teaching strategies and counseled him on ways to be a successful teacher.

Doug's easy demeanor and non-threatening personality often make him successful working with students experiencing behavioral challenges. His nominators say no matter who comes into his classroom, he does not complain. He adopts at-risk students with open arms and soon they become one of his own.

Doug has also coached nearly every sport offered at Pioneer. You'll often find him serving as a time-keeper, referee or whatever job is needed to make sure the contests operate smoothly.

Congratulations to Doug Venneri for rising to the top in our district.

WASL – “Rubber hits the road”
What you need to know about the WASL

The state’s new graduation requirements become “real” this year as students in the Class of 2008 receive results of their first attempt at the 10th grade Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL).

Passing the WASL will be the avenue most students take to earn the Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA) — one of the four new statewide graduation requirements. Students in special education programs may participate in alternate assessments and earn a Certificate of Individual Achievement (CIA).

WASL “must knows”
When will students receive their Spring 2006 WASL scores?
· June 12 & 13, tenth grade students receive their individual WASL Score Reports for reading, math and writing. Science scores will be released in fall 2006. Ninth, eleventh and twelfth grade students who tested in March and April will also receive their results in the fall.

Will Special Education students receive their portfolio results at the same time?
· Students in special education programs who submitted a portfolio or took the WASL at a different grade level, Developmentally Appropriate WASL (DAW), will also receive their results in the fall. A retake opportunity for these students will be offered in early November.

How will students who did not meet standards receive additional learning opportunities?
· Summer Institute, six weeks of specialized instruction in reading, writing and math, will be offered at Wa-Hi to current tenth graders who scored in Level 2 in a particular area. Tenth grade students and parents are asked to pick up students’ individual WASL Score Reports (WSR) at Wa-Hi June 12 & 13 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the library. Classes will be offered at no cost to students, June 28 – August 3, Monday thru Thursday, 8 – 11 a.m. Contact Mira Gobel for specifics.

When will students in the Class of 2008 have their first chance at a retake?
· The August WASL will be administered August 7-10, 2006 at Wa-Hi (reading, math and writing only). Online registration, June 9 – July 9, is at www.k12.wa.us/waslregistration or by toll-free phone 1-866-400-WASL (9275). The August WASL is open to any current tenth or eleventh grader who wishes to retake the assessment and registers in advance. Participation in the Summer Institute in not a prerequisite for taking the August WASL. Students must be able to give their Secure Student Identifier (SSID) 10 digit ID number when they register. Contact Ron Higgins for more information.

What happens if they don’t meet standards after the August retake?
· Students have five state-paid tries to pass the WASL. Students who complete only one day of the two-day test do not receive a score and their “attempt” is not counted as one of the five tries. Students will only need to retake the portion(s) of the WASL they did not pass. If a ninth grader decides to take the test and does not earn a score high enough to meet the required standards, the student will have used his/her first state-paid attempt to pass the WASL.

Will students receive additional learning opportunities during the school year?
· For students who are having difficulty passing the WASL, a variety of approaches to help students who are behind in learning key skills will be put into place by each building in the district.

How can I get additional information regarding new graduation requirements?
· OSPI’s website contains a great deal of information about effective strategies to teach the state’s learning standards. Visit www.k12.wa.us/ealrs/default.aspx to view a variety of instructional support aligned specifically to the grade level expectations for reading, math, science, writing and communications. Several instructional support modules have also been developed by OSPI.

Will students have alternative options to meeting WASL standards?
· If a student does not meet one or more of the standards after taking the WASL twice and has met attendance and remediation requirements on his/her Student Learning Plan (SLP), the student is eligible to use an alternative method for obtaining a Certificate of Academic Achievement (CAA). An SLP will be created for any current 10th grader who does not meet standard on the WASL. For more information about SLPs, contact your school counselor. Alternate methods for obtaining a CAA will be available in 2006-2007.

Questions?
· Address any further questions/concerns to the WWPS Director of Assessment, 526-6707.

Century plus alumna celebrates end of year with Green Park students
When Helen Douglas attended Green Park in 1907, she had no idea that nearly 100 years later current Principal Mike Lambert would present her with a certificate of academic achievement for her outstanding progress during her time in school.

But that’s exactly what happened Wednesday as Lambert invited her to the school’s end of year awards celebration assembly. Lambert was able to find her school report cards from the early 1900s and share some of her academic excellence with today’s Green Park students.

Lambert learned about Helen Crawford -- as her maiden name was Douglas -- after she wrote him a letter explaining how sorry she was she could not attend any of the school’s 100 year birthday activities. Now a resident at the Odd Fellows Home, Crawford said in her letter nearly all the boys wore neckties to school in her days and that buying penny candies at the neighborhood grocery store across the street -- now the Hospice Center -- was the highlight of her day. Helen was brought to school joined by several Green Park students in a limo. She toured the school and talked with staff and students about her years at Green Park nearly a century ago during her three hour visit.

She was born Helen Douglas, in Warren, Illinois on December 1, 1900. Her family came to Walla Walla on the train. She said her dad secured an entire box car and they brought all their belongings. She started at Green Park in the 2nd grade during the 1907-08 school year. She went to Green Park through the 8th grade and continues to be a proud alumna of the school.

Weisner in town to help lead interview teams
Community members and staff had a chance to meet new Wa-Hi Principal Darcy Weisner Tuesday afternoon during a special welcoming event. He said he is anxious to carry on the school’s proud tradition.

Weisner is in Walla Walla the next two days to help lead interview teams through the selection process for two new assistant principals. Dr. Bill Jordan said he hopes to have the assistant principals hired this month.
