6970 - Naming Schools & Facilities

BOARD POLICY No. 6970

NAMING SCHOOLS AND FACILITIES

The final decision to name, rename or modify the name of new and/or existing facilities resides under the Board of Directors following the recommendation from the Superintendent.

Only when new schools are built, significant new or renovated infrastructure is added, significant change in building use, or substantive financial gifts are provided to support new and/or renovated infrastructure, will the Board of Directors consider naming the facilities.

Memorial naming, commemorating, or renaming current facilities that do not meet the above criteria will not be considered by the Board of Directors.

When considering naming new district buildings and/or current facilities they will be named after persons who have attained national or local prominence in the fields of education, arts and sciences, politics, military achievements and statesmanship, after past U.S. presidents or Washington national senators or representatives, after the geographic characteristics of the area in which the facility is located, or in recognition of substantive financial contributions to the specific project. They will not be named after individuals who have worked with the school district within the last 2 years.
