BOARD POLICY No. 5401
The district shall grant each full-time certificated and classified staff member of the district 12 sick leave days annually. Part time employees shall receive a prorated amount of sick leave days annually. These days are to be used for the employee’s illness or injury, emergencies and for care of the employee’s child, spouse, parent, parent-in-law, or grandparent within the scope of the Washington Family Care rules and Family and Medical Leave Act. Sick leave taken for emergencies shall be taken according to negotiated agreements.
Unused sick leave may be accumulated on a year-to-year basis up to a maximum of the number of days in a contract period, not to exceed one year. Employees may choose to be remunerated for unused sick leave as outlined under the attendance incentive program in negotiated agreements.
To determine if an employee qualifies for Family Medical Leave based on the serious health condition of the employee or the employee’s spouse, child or parent, the district may require a “Medical Certification Statement” from a health care provider.
The district has the right to require the employee to simultaneously take Family Medical Leave and sick leave when the leave is for a serious health condition of the employee, or for the employee’s child, spouse or parents.
Sick leave may be deducted for other reasons according to negotiated agreements.
