Task Force Overview

The Facilities Task Force was convened in both 1995 and 2002 to assess the needs of district facilities and make recommendations to the School Board of Directors for a long-range facilities management plan, without primary regard for funding or curriculum.  Among the 1995 recommendations were renovation of Sharpstein Elementary School, remodeling/replacing Edison Elementary School, and exploring relocation of the Maintenance/Transportation/Warehouse facilities.  In 2002, recommendations included surveying the community about Wa-Hi campus infrastructure upgrades and future facility needs, surveying the community about building a new gym at Pioneer Middle School, appointing a committee to review high school sports facility needs, and renovating/replacing the Support Services Facility.

The School Board of Directors has requested that the Task Force reconvene at this time to again study facilities and present some long-range recommendations in May or June of 2010.  Nine members of the 2002 group are included in the new group, as well as many others representing parents, area businesses, agricultural interests and district employees.  Dan Reid, a parent and employee of Opp-Seibold Construction, served as the chair in both 1995 and 2002 and he continues his role for this group as well.

Scope of Work/Timeline

There will be approximately eight meetings in 2010. They are scheduled for the second and fourth Wednesdays in January, February and March, with monthly meetings (as needed) in April, May and June.

Study materials and meeting topics will include technology, green building methods, creativity, special needs, physical education and recreation, city/county growth projections, alternative construction delivery systems and maintenance methods/procedures.   The district consists of one million square feet of building space on a total of 140 acres.   Building ages range from very new (Edison) to the 1920’s (Lincoln).

During the first meeting in January, staff members from several district buildings will be part of a panel discussion on how the condition of facilities impacts learning.  Subsequent meetings will explore other topics and task force members will request input from parents, students and other district stakeholders.
